Turns out the boot files were MoC because the hard drive had somehow fried its little mind; the primary partition was missing and without that, the entire drive is useless. No wonder Paul couldn't find it's boot files. :/
Anywho, $133 later (I think I saved myself some $$ because I had the recovery disks), Paul is back in business and I am slowly importing backup files. I had a lot of junk on him before and am taking the opportunity to trim a little.
Repair guy said he couldn't find the cause, apparently sometimes hard drives stop working (technological suicide?), so I shelved the idea of having Clear pay for at least part of this. When I called to cancel because I needed the money to pay for repairs, they were nice enough to refund me and put my account in hibernation for six months. I can reactivate anytime during those six months, I was told, with the same terms I had before.
I do have to say everybody I talked to at Clear were very nice (which made it easier for me to be nice) and very helpful. I'm considering going back.
