I've been in Warner Robins, my hometown, for the past week. My stepdad, Bob, died last Thursday, so I was down there helping out my mom. He had been sick for years from complications of diabetes. His heart was weak, his kidneys were shutting down, etc. He had gone to the hospital the day before for dialysis, and collapsed in the back yard the next day.
I wasn't as close to him as I was with my father, but for the past few years we'd been getting along pretty well. I'm bummed about his passing, but mostly I'm bummed for my mom. I can't imagine what losing a spouse is like, especially since she's basically devoted the past six years to his care along with working a full time job in education, which is stressful enough on it's own.
The brightside to all of this is seeing my extended family and learning about how remarkable they are, how rich of a legacy i've inherited from them. I want to spend more time with them and get to know them better in the coming months.
