SPN: 4:10 Dean Loves Cas
I think that there were a lot of hints that Dean started having strong feelings for Cas WAY before seasons six and seven. In season 4, we already know that Cas is emotionally compromised by Dean, that everyone around him comments on it, from Uriel to Anna to Zachariah. But is Dean feeling the love? Oh, yes. Yes and yes.
When I re-watched 4:10, Heaven and Hell, I was struck by a couple of things.
First of all, Dean immediately recognizes that he’s in a dream with Uriel. Interesting. We get many hints in season 4 that there is a lot going on in Dean and Cas’s relationship that we never see. MOST of it is happening off-stage.
Later on, we see Cas step into Dean’s dreams to communicate with him. From Dean’s lack of surprise and general comfort level, it could be something that Cas does often. There is certainly more than a hint of familiarity here.
We’ve never seen Dean do this before, but he takes one look at Uriel, glances around and confidently declares that this is a dream. To me, this strongly suggests that Cas has been communicating with Dean through his dreams for a while now. Dean is familiar with this, Dean recognizes it immediately. And what are his next words? ”Where’s your boss?”
Would Uriel have admitted it if Dean hadn’t figured it out? I doubt it. If I was trying to intimidate someone, I’d much rather that they think I’m there intimidating them, than for them to think it’s just some wussy dream.
Then Uriel’s famous line: He has this weakness. He likes you.
Cut to a Dean reaction shot. His eyes widen slightly, he squares his shoulders and straightens a little. He reacts. To the thought that Castiel likes him. I wish I had a gif of it, but maybe someone else can find one.

And last but not least, when Alastair is banishing Cas, Dean jumps in unhesitatingly to help him. Despite the fact that Cas was getting ready to kill Dean’s last lay, Anna. Despite the fact that the ‘angels’ have threatened to kill SAM. SAM, Dean’s brother who he loves more than anything!!! Despite that, Dean jumps in to save Cas.
Now, when I considered that action against the other stuff happening, and against what we’ve established as Dean’s main character motivation up to this point (protect Sammy)… I was like… whoah. Apparently Dean likes this Cas guy back.
