Soap cliche prompts!
Okay, I was talking with nancygrew about soap cliches. Here's a nice annotated list of cliches.
I haven't seen some of the fun ones show up in Luke/Reid stories yet (caveat, I don't read everything, of course, so I've probably missed a lot).
Some of my faves:
1. Secret Twin, potentially EVILLL (or not, whatever). I think it'd be interesting if Reid had a twin brother that his family kept secret from him - for some reason...? La di da. Bonus points if the secret twin is some lame kind of doctor, like a podiatrist. Or a dentist, lololol. You could twist this one and have it be angsty, with Luke meeting Reid's secret twin after the train accident; maybe the secret twin always thought he was straight, but finds himself mysteriously drawn to Luke...
2. Surprise, you're related! Somewhat following on slow_autumn's post, instead of Reid being related to a random Oakdalian, they could discover that Reid was really the offspring of Damian's ill-fated young affair with Reid's mother! Oooops, Reid and Luke are incesty brothers now! Much angst and suppressed longing ensues. La la la super-long and angsty story; then the final twist - surprise, I lied/faked the paternity test/was wrong/whatever! Luke and Reid aren't brothers and can safely get it on. You'd probably have to mess around with the ages of some of the characters to get it to work out properly.
3. Split personalities - Luke has a psychotic break and has a secret slutty personality that comes out during times of stress. Maybe Slutty!Luke met Reid in Dallas and they had a one night stand. Reid leaves afterwards and the next morning Normal!Luke doesn't remember his slutty deeds. Then when Reid finally shows up in Oakdale, Reid's like, "I can't believe you don't remember the awesome, awesome sex we had that night! It was awesome! [substitute your own non-shitty dialog here, ha]" And Luke says, "I've never met you before in my life, good sir! I am in a committed relationship with this completely non-douchey blind person you see here named Noah!" (Surprise twist - he might really be a douche.) No idea where it goes from there. Maybe instead of a psychotic break, Luke has a brain tumor that causes secret!sluttiness and memory lapses. Reid must save him!
