I totally just lost my reply to this. It was very insightful and well-written :D. Yeah, that's what I took from his statement too. I'm not sure how much we'll hear from Van or ESS on the end, because Van at least does tend to toe the line somewhat (which is completely understandable) and they're bound to have different perspectives on what they wanted, especially if they got meaty scenes. I just want one of the three to acknowledge that it sucks the straight couples end up happy and the gay couples are "open-ended."
I'm a bit more pessimistic about this than you are, simply because Van and Jake both have an unfortunately tendency of referring to "the fans" when what they REALLY mean are "the Nuke fans." I also seem to recall rumors that Dansby is writing the next-to-the-last episode, and she fairly consistently throws LuRe development and consistency out the window in order to write with a Nuke spin. I can easily see this ending with a "you're still the one" bit of garbage that will leave everyone outside of the Nuke cult spitting nails.
But whatever. I won't be watching by this point anyway.
Eh? I don't pay much attention to the writers, but I thought Dansby was one of the better LuRe writers? She's always one of the ones listed in relation to good LuRe development/scenes.
Yeah, she's given us some good LuRe scenes, but I've never understood the general accolades. She's also given us that WTF day of Noah's operation, where all of a sudden Luke decides that Reid dislikes him (despite everything that happened in Dallas and almost-kiss day) (also the Dream Sequence of Utter Stupidity); she's responsible for Luke's "does hitting Reid mean you still care" BS; and she wrote this week's "there'll never be anyone like you for me" crap, which I found completely ridiculous. I feel like she does well enough for LuRe when she has to, but everything about her from her writing (and from her Twitter messages) screams out that she thinks LuRe is just a speedbump on the Nuke Highway of True Lurve.
It's funny that you say that because the Luke/Noah fans that I've seen seem to DESPISE her for the complete opposite reason.
And I kind of felt that all of those eps did have more of a Luke/Reid slant. And more than one of those eps literally used the phrase "Noah treated Luke like crap".
I think she does throw Luke/Noah fans a bone sometimes, and she does seem to view their relationship as important (and I think she should)...but I really do think Reid (as a character) especially came off amazingly well in all of those eps.
I don't think she's a Reid hater, only that she's a proud member of the Nuke Endgame brigade, and I don't have any faith that she won't allow her preference to leak through in a scene that plays like "Luke just needs to pout for a bit over the loss of his cute doctor, before returning to his ForeverSoulmateOMG!". I will happily be proven wrong on this, and I guess we'll know soon enough.
Does she treat Nuke with respect? Yeah, she'll throw in things that remind the audience of the deep feelings they had for one another but I think she overall writes more strongly for LuRe. Like if I were comparing, there'd be ten supremely awesome things in her script for L/R and then one or two bones for Nuke fans...but even so, I those moments are relatively subtle and not majorly detrimental. Basically, hints but open to a lot of interpretation.
This is kind of random, but since you said "one of the best" I figure I'll ask... Do you know where I can find a list of who writes the show on what day? I'd love to see who actually does write the best episodes.
Well, there's going to be an interview with ESS specifically about the ending. So, we've got that to look forward to. He agreed to it in the interview he did with Michael.
