"Dr. Oliver could move in here," Ethan blurted out. It wasn't a very well thought out idea, but Noah lived with them so why couldn't Dr. Oliver?
Luke made an odd choking sound that ended in a laugh. "That...would not work out."
"That's an understatement," Dr. Oliver said dryly behind them. In each hand was a glass of milk and the cookie jar was wedged under his arm. He pushed his way between Ethan and Luke and handed Ethan one of the glasses. "You know, I'm not the kind of guy who shares," he said, setting the cookie jar on the coffee table. He took off the lid and handed Ethan a chocolate chip cookie, "but I get how special your brother is. If you want, after we get unpacked an all, you could come over for a sleep party."
Ethan's eyebrows raised and he asked confused, "What's a sleep party?" He looked to Luke for help and Luke translated for Dr. Oliver.
"He means a sleepover."
"Right," Dr. Oliver nodded, "that! Look, what I'm saying is that I know your brother's really important to you and you're always welcome to come over...within reason of course. We're putting bunk beds in one of the spare rooms, that's cool, right?"
Dr. Oliver was so weird, but the bunk beds did sound kind of cool. "Can we put stars on the ceiling?"
Dr. Oliver looked between Luke and Ethan and said, "Sure?"
"Cool," Ethan said.
"Cool," Dr. Oliver repeated, giving a tentative smile. "Right, so I'm tired of chess, is there something else that we can all play?"
"Yahtzee?" Ethan asked eagerly. He almost always won when he played.
"What's that?" Dr. Oliver asked.
"Seriously?!" Luke cried, exasperated.
Dr. Oliver rolled his eyes and told Ethan, "Go get the game, kid."
Ethan jumped up and took a bite of the cookie before starting up the stairs. Curious, he stopped and turned back to watch Luke and Dr. Oliver.
"Your ridiculous you know," Luke said.
"I'm sorry I'm not as well versed as you are in board games."
"It's actually a dice game."
"Whatever."
"I appreciate what you said to Ethan," Luke said, running his fingers through Dr. Oliver's hair.
"I meant it. Your family is important to you and I'll do whatever it takes to keep you happy."
"I am happy. You make me happy," Luke said, smiling brightly.
Ethan didn't really realize it until that moment, but his brother did seem a whole lot happier. Much, much ,happier than when Noah was living with them.
"I love you, Luke" Dr. Oliver said and he began to trace Luke's lips with his fingers.
Ethan's face screwed up in disgust. They were going to kiss, he knew it, and Ethan would never understand why grownups did it. It looked so gross! He ran the rest of the way up the stairs and tried to focus on the good: He'd be getting his own room at Luke's new house, he was going to win at Yahtzee, and he was done playing chess!
Grumble grumble, making me cut it up, grumble grumble. Oh, and obviously no beta.

I love that he calls them that in his head! Nice touch.

Also, cookies! Better for bonding than chess. And sweet LuRe touching. Oh, and Yahtzee is the best.
My favorite aspect, though, is that Reid's not looking for a replacement family and is with Luke for Luke (as it should be). ♥
