ATWT's Stevens On I HATE MY TEENAGE DAUGHTER
Eric Sheffer Stevens's Reid was a neurosurgeon on ATWT: his brand-new character Matt on I HATE MY TEENAGE DAUGHTER is anything but. "He has a very boyish reluctance to grow up and he's easily distracted from his responsibility," Stevens explains.
The actor reveals that Matt has been reworked a bit since the pilot was shot. "Originally, Matt was a bit dense, which is fun to play, but there's not much you can do with it storyline-wise." The premise of the show is that Matt and his ex-wife Annie (Jaime Pressly) are raising a teenage daughter Sophie (Kristi Lauren) with help from Matt's more responsible brother Jack (Kevin Rahm).
Stevens landed the role on the new Fox comedy earlier this year. "I was out in L.A. last January for pilot season or what's left of that idea. It was one of the things I auditioned for, and surprisingly, it worked out."
Unlike ATWT, the sitcom is "filmed in front of a live audience. It's a combination of live theater and camera work. You are playing off the energy of people in real time," Stevens continues. "That exercises all of the theater muscle you've developed over time. That's really fun. You know the material really well and you are actually dying for the live audience to watch and play off of. It's the best of both worlds. You have the cameras, but you get another take if you mess up. The pressure is taken off you, because you know you are going to get to do it as often as possible until you get it right. I found doing the soap more nerve-wracking; you basically have two takes and then you move on."
Ever-loyal ATWT fans are already eagerly awaiting the series debut. "A bunch came to the pilot we shot in March. It was so fantastic and sweet."
I HATE MY TEENAGE DAUGHTER debuts Wednesday, November 30, at 9:30 on Fox.
