Fragile, like a baby in your arms.
Be gentle with me.
I’d never willingly,
Do you harm.

Weaknesses,
You know each and every one,
But I need to drink,
More than you seem to think,
Before I’m anyone’s,
And you know

“It’s a Question of Lust”; Depeche Mode

Chapter #6:

Sleep was difficult as Luke continued to feel Dr.Oliver’s… Reid’s lips, they were so soft yet so demanding.  The shot of lust that went through Luke’s body was amazing and alarming.  Luke shook his head ruefully. “Dr. Oliver hates me”, Luke thought “What ever lies Noah had told him played Luke as the bad guy in the relationship.  Luke had never told anyone about Noah’s indescretions, he just told everyone that it didn’t work out and he was done with it.

Everyone suspected their was more to it but when Luke fell into his drunken relapse they were too worried about Luke’s health.  Nobody asked the reason why he fell so far, they just wanted him to get better.  Dr. Oliver and Casey seemed to know more of the real story than most.

Luke undressed and climbed into bed, willing the images of Dr. Oliver out of his mind and finally he fell into a restless sleep.

A few block’s a way Dr. Reid Oliver was having some sleeping difficulties of her own.  He could not believe he went to help out the spoiled rich kid and ended up having one of the hottest kisses that he could remember.  The stab of lust that hit him was unbelievable and it was more than that, he wanted him but it was a feeling of needing to take care of him.

The pain and haunting in those brown eyes was unsettling and he just wanted to wipe it a way and see him smile.  Reid shook his head trying to clear his thoughts, this is what you have become after going to Oakhell.  The influence of Dr. Bob, Katie, Jacob and of course Casey had changed the usual gruff and uncaring, or so he liked people to believe Dr. Reid Oliver.  He had friends and they worried about him, nobody had worried about him for a long time and although he was still an asshole and disliked many now he did like a few and they actually liked him.

Reid needed sleep he had an early surgery the next morning and then a meeting with the team leading the building of the new neurology wing.  He hated to be part of the paper pushing beaurucracy but he wanted the new wing to be perfect and have everything he wanted and needed to perform his miraculous surgeries.

Luke woke to a slight headache and a feeling of restlessness, he went to the kitchen and saw Susannah and Cal.
“Good morning son, how was your night out on the town?” Cal asked, looking up from the paper.

“It was fun, I actually had a good time with Casey and Ali”. Luke said, not telling Cal anything about meeting up with Dr. Oliver. “How are you feeling this morning, Cal?” Luke asked.

Cal looked pale and Luke could see the pain in his face.
“Oh, I’m okay Luke, the head is throbbing but I know that I’ll be seeing Dr. Oliver on Monday morning so hopefully we’ll figure out what’s causing this constant pain in my head”. Cal shrugged.

“Why didn’t you see him earlier grand-dad? You’ve been suffering for weeks now.” Luke inquired.

“Come on Luke, Dr. Oliver is a busy man, I was not going to make my problem bigger than anybody else’s.  I’m being treated like any other patient, you should now me well enough by now that I would never use my money to push myself ahead of other people.” Cal replied.

Luke sighed and rubbed his hand across his face, remembering that he had did just that a few years ago, with Damians’ help.  “No wonder Dr. Oliver hates me so much.” he thought.

“Just take it easy today Cal, we have the fundraiser tonight with the casino and silent auction and I don’t want you to tire yourself out.” Luke said to Cal as he sat down beside him.

“You should to the same Luke.” Cal replied to Luke. “You can’t run yourself down either or you’ll get sick as well.”

“I know Cal, I’m taking my meds and after today and tonight I can take a little break before it gets hectic with the new wing.  This is my fourth facility so I’m pretty good at handing things over to the people involved so I’m not as overwhelmed.  I’ve got a good team in place here so in a few weeks I can head to London and start the initial planning for the hospital there.” Luke told Cal.

“I just wish you would slow down a little Luke and maybe settle in one place for more than a few months.  How will you ever find someone to be with if you keep moving so much?” Cal questioned.

“Cal I’m not in any position emotionally to deal with a relationship and I can’t do casual, its not me.  Noah left so many scars that I’m slowly healing and I just don’t know if I can trust anyone with my heart.  I still feel broken and I’m not strong enough to handle another relationship like that”. Luke ducked his head, his lips quivering a bit.

“Nonesense Luke, you’re a young smart handsome man, someone is going to come along and surprise just you wait and see.  You’ve had only one relationship, that ended badly don’t think that everyone is the same and it will happen again.”  Cal said and got up from the table.

Luke sighed and gave a shaky smile, remembering the kiss he shared with Dr. Oliver the night before.

“You might be right Cal.” he thought to himself, before he got up and headed towards the shower.

An hour later Luke was at the hospital to meet with the board of directors and discuss his plans for the new wing.  His presentation covered the building of his first wing at Claude Bernard University hospital in Lyon, and the reasons behind it.

Some of the presentation was very personal touching on Luke’s time at the Re-hab Centre and what inspired him to make hospitals more like them. The thereaputic atriums and gardens indoors and out that were able to lift his spirits since he was so from home and those of his family when they came to visit him.

Reid Oliver hated meetings and he was running late, his surgery had taken a few hours longer then anticipated and his lack of sleep made him more cranky than usual.  He was starving and since they had a buffet lunch set up outside the auditorium he went there first and loaded up his plate.

As he made his way into the auditorium to find a seat a bun fell off of his mountain of food and rolled down to aisle to land at none other than Luke Snyder’s feet.  Luke looked up into the startling blue eyes of Dr. Oliver and picked up the bun and brought it up to him.

“I think this is yours.” he said with a little smile.

“Oh, sorry for the interruption, I’ll just go sit down.” Reid stammered and placed the bun in his mouth and nodded his head as he went to sit down.

Luke shrugged and shook his head as he walked back to the front of the auditorium.  On the screen above him was a beautiful courtyard with a fountain.  Luke began again, describing the facility he had been in and how the peaceful setting helped him conquer his demons and how the tranquility helped him heal.

Reid usually ignored these types of presentations and would think about other things during them, new surgical techniques or a particular case.  But something in the way Luke spoke kept pulling him out of his thoughts and back to what Luke was saying.  It didn’t help that Luke looked hot in his dark suit and blue dress shirt that did not have a tie but showed a tuft of hair just above the top button, much like the t-shirt the night before.  Reid shifted in his seat suddenly aware of a sharp bolt of lust that had passed down his body and into groin as he watched Luke, move back and forth in the front of the room.

Luke continued with the plan’s that he had completed and Claude Bernard and its success.  Reid perked up suddenly as he looked at  the last picture, he saw a smiling Luke with his arm around Dr. Jean Paul Benoit or J.P. as Reid knew him standing together in front of the new wing.

Luke told everyone how important it was to speak to the doctors and make sure that they were addressing all of their concerns.  Luke looked up at the picture and smiled as he said “and sometimes you get to make life long friends along the way.”

He turned towards his audience again and Reid was amazed at how Luke’s face had transformed, his smile showed his dimples and his eyes were alight with happiness and excitement.

“The same may be true with this venture, I am looking forward to working with everyone here at the University of Texas South Western Medical Center.  Does anyone have any questions?” Luke asked as he turned his computer off.

“Mr. Snyder, how do you expect to fulfil all the patients and doctors needs if we waste money on building indoor gardens and playgrounds?” Reid asked snarkily.

“Dr. Oliver I assure you that all of your needs will be met as well as the needs of your patients and their families." Luke replied, emphasizing the ‘your needs’ then he added “Actually an indoor playground for the kids is a great idea, thanks.”

Reid’s eyebrows went up and he replied, “I see, Mr. Snyder , but I still feel that a lab next to the surgical theatres would be more beneficial than palm trees in the atrium.”

“Don’t worry Dr. Oliver we can sit down and go over the plan’s together so I can make sure that the lab is in the right place and not under the palm trees.” Luke shot back.

“Is there anymore questions?” he asked.  “Thank you again for your time everyone, see you tonight at the fundraiser.”  With that Luke turned to unplug the computer.
