Reid was still at Luke’s apartment the following morning. He’d stayed after he and Luke received their respective phone calls. They’d done nothing but think and talk about the possibility of Luke not graduating and Reid losing his job because of their relationship.
At first, Reid couldn’t believe his best friend and Luke’s advisor, Alex, was involved in this mess and was possibly siding with the university regarding Reid and Luke’s affair. After thinking it through, though, Reid figured that the Chancellor and Dean were simply forcing his hand. Reid tried to call him a few times, but Alex never answered the phone.
Reid and Luke couldn’t even be intimate when they went to bed that evening. They were worrying and stressing too much about the next day’s meetings. They slept side by side in the same bed, clad only in boxers. But clothes or no clothes neither had any sexual urges that night.
Reid and Luke dressed the following morning, with Reid going home early to change into a suit before returning to Luke’s and Luke putting on his best clothes for his meeting with Alex.
Luke and Reid left the apartment together hand in hand.
Very few students were left on campus as most of them had left for home after the semester ended. The only students remaining were preparing for graduation.
Reid and Luke walked to the Chancellor’s building. They looked at each other, neither knowing what to say to alleviate their questions and fears. Reid leaned in to Luke and gave him a kiss before heading inside. Luke headed to the English and Literature building to talk to his advisor.
Luke walked right into his advisor’s office. Alex looked up, surprised that Reid was not with him as he’d expected.
“Dr. Cullen, what the hell is wrong with you?” Luke yelled, standing with his hands on his hips in front of Alex’s desk.
Alex didn’t say a word.
“You know how Reid and I feel about each other and Reid is your best friend. You should protect him; go to bat for him . . . something.”
“I know, Luke.”
“Why aren’t you, then? Keeping your mouth shut to save your own ass?”
“No!”
“Then enlighten me,” Luke said sarcastically.
Alex ran a hand through his hair. “Luke, this is really complicated . . .”
“Really? I don’t see how. I love Reid and Reid loves me. What part about it is so complicated?”
“He’s your teacher,” Alex said bluntly.
“He was until I finished. I’m done with school.”
“Yes, and if you had waited to start dating him until tomorrow, then there would be no problem.”
Luke folded his arms across his chest. “We love each other; what is so damn wrong about that?”
Alex stood and leaned across the desk. “The fact that he was one of YOUR teacher plays a factor. Now I believe the grade he gave you is fair since I know you got all as this term. BUT what if students think ‘if I date a teacher I could get an A too’? What about parents; what if they find out about this? How do you think it’s going to look?”
“I’m a student but also an adult, damn it! And I have been alone way too long in my life; I deserve to be happy and I don’t care what other students or their parents think.”
“I don’t doubt that.”
“Can’t you understand?” pleaded Luke.
“I do understand you, Luke, I do. I don’t want you or Reid to get hurt by all this. I want Reid to be happy. He’s been so alone all his life. It’s damn scary how he could go that long without anyone.”
Luke stared at Alex.
“Luke, believe me. I have tried everything to make this go away, to leave you two alone, to keep anyone from making an issue out of this. I even tried to drop you from the class so that it looked like ‘academically,’ you had nothing to do with Reid, but I couldn’t. And I got into big trouble for that one,” admitted Alex.
“Wow, really?”
“Yes! Do you really think I want you and Reid to split? I’m on your side. You make Reid happy, Luke, and I haven’t see Reid be so happy in a really, really long time.”
“I didn’t know that,” Luke said quietly. “Are-are you getting fired for tampering with my record?”
Alex sighed and shook his head. “No, I got a write up, but I can’t directly have access to student records anymore with approval.”
Both men remained quiet for a moment.
“I was supposed to give the commencement speech, you know,” Luke said.
Alex nodded. “I know and you have worked so hard, Luke. I’m sorry.”
Luke sighed. “What do I do now?”
“Go.”
Luke looked confused. “Go?”
“Go be with Reid.”
“I can’t. He’s having his own meeting as we speak.”
“I know. Go to him, Luke. Go to him now. Help him,” Alex said, his eyes staring hard into Luke’s.
Luke nodded, understanding, and left hurriedly to find and help Reid.
Reid was in the Chancellor’s office with the Dean from the biology department when Luke arrived. He stood outside the door listening to Reid scream at them for forcing Luke to be denied his graduation rights and his degree. As Reid continued his bellowing, Luke heard his own name mentioned multiple times. Luke didn’t know how long Reid had been yelling, but it seemed Reid was only really fighting for Luke and not for himself.
“I was the one who started this relationship. I pursued him. Luke had reservations on account of our student-teacher relationship, but I didn’t let up. I was attracted to him early on and, come on, can you blame me?” He chuckled to himself before continuing. “But it was and has been a personal relationship all this time. In my classroom, he was Luke the student and nothing more. Outside of this university, he was Luke, my boyfriend and nothing more. And I can assure you that there was never any special treatment in his school work or in his grades because of what went on beyond these walls. Luke knew that and understood it. Why can’t you?”
When no one said anything, Reid continued. “I’ll also add that if you don’t give Luke his diploma, I’ll sue you for discrimination based on sexual orientation. I bet you wouldn’t have such a huge problem with this if Luke and I weren’t gay. But because you and the big, fat donors don’t like our kind, then all of a sudden, my and Luke’s relationship is the worst thing to ever happen to this school.”
Luke walked in and stopped Reid from going any further.
Reid looked shocked to see him. “Luke, what are you doing here?”
“I am saving you from yourself.”
Luke faced the two men.
“Gentlemen, this can’t actually be about the donors wanting us gone because we’re a gay couple, now is it? This university has always prided itself on being so welcoming and accepting-at least that’s what you have us believe. And that’s why my father, Damien, and other citizens of this town give so much money every year so you can expand and add to this school, which, now that I think about, you’re not doing. You wouldn’t want me to tell my dad that his generous contributions are going into paying for your Lexus, now do you? And I know you don’t want me talking about your budget issues and how you suddenly lost twenty professors at once.” Luke smiled at them, knowing that they knew what he was talking about. Reid had confided in Luke the real reason for the abrupt departure of some of the most popular faculty. The Chancellor had explained to the staff that no one was getting a raise that year, no matter how long they'd been working for the university; thus, these professors had fled. But the university, to save face, had told the students and public that it was due to budget cuts, a budget that in actuality was quite healthy. “I think my dad and all the other donors would be pretty upset with that kind of information. Even the Congressman who prides himself on being an alumnus and who’s all about promoting higher education wouldn’t be too happy hearing all this. You know you don’t want any bad press.”
The Chancellor swallowed hard.
“Plus,” Luke added, “if people find out you are discriminating based on sexuality or race or whatever, how do you think your enrollment will be affected? I’m sure the gay community and everyone else will just love to hear you say you prefer only straight people coming to this school.”
Reid couldn’t believe what Luke was saying.
“And before I leave, let me remind you that I’m no longer a student and Reid is no longer my teacher and our relationship never broke any rules or policy.” Luke moved beside Reid. “And I love Reid and he loves me, so deal with it.”
And with that Luke pulled a stunned Reid out of the office. Once outside, Luke exhaled sharply and looked over at Reid, who looked ready to devour him. They rushed to Luke’s apartment, Reid pulling at Luke’s clothes before they even got inside. Luke, laughing and batting Reid’s hands away, told him to be patient and get inside first as he didn’t want to be caught doing it outside.
So Reid almost knocked down the door to Luke’s place as they went inside. Reid then practically ripped off Luke’s clothes, removed all of his and pushed Luke on to the bed, where he ravaged him. Luke knew his ass was going to hurt in the morning. They took turns, Reid even letting Luke top him a few times. Luke wasn’t sure if he was going to be good at, at first but then didn’t really care as both were so hot and aroused that nothing mattered except being with each other. They knew what was important, and they put aside everything else as they satisfied their lust and desire over and over until the sun set and rose again.
