Title: The Light that I'd Bless
Genre/Type: Fix-it Romance with some angst sprinkled in here, there and everywhere
Rating: PG-13 to NC-17 depending on chapter
Characters/Pairings: Luke/Reid...who else is there?
Disclaimers: I own nothing, I know nothing
Warning: A healthy dose of angst. It's not always going to be rainbows and unicorns, friends. But it will all be fixed!
A/N...I hope that you are not disappointed with the time leap in this chapter. I had written an entire chapter of the surgery, but I really didn't feel right about it. It just didn't work for me, so I scrapped it and picked up the story here...
Chapter 35
Reid looked over at Greg, a silent question in his eyes.
I’ll close him up.
You go out there and talk to them.
*****************************************************************
Luke saw him first. He was sitting next to Katie, holding her hand, when he sensed Reid’s presence in the room.
He looked at Reid, searching his face, and broke out into a wide grin. He leaned over to whisper into Katie’s ear.
All hail the conquering hero.
Look who’s here, Katie.
Katie jumped up from her chair and ran to Reid, already sobbing.
Jacob…is he?
Reid?
Reid reached out and gently grabbed Katie’s face for the second time that day.
It looks good, Katie, it looks really good. We were able to remove the entire tumor without any damage to the surrounding tissue.
And, as we were getting ready to close him up, the biopsy results came back. It was benign, Blondie. No cancer cells.
The entire room erupted in cheers and hugs and Katie threw her arms around Reid, gripping him tightly. Reid fought the urge, but then gave in and gripped her right back.
He’ll need to stay in the ICU for a bit so he can be monitored around the clock and we’ll start him on antibiotics to prevent infection and steroids to cut down on swelling.
If everything goes as I expect it to, you should be able to take him home within the week. And, as luck would have it, you have the world’s greatest neurosurgeon living with you, so I feel confident that Jacob will get the best care possible.
Katie peppered Reid’s face with kisses as Reid pretended to be disgusted.
Thank you, Reid. You know I never doubted for a minute that you could do this.
I knew you’d live up to your hype.
Reid smiled at her and gently pulled her arms from around his neck.
Listen, I’m going to go check back in with Dr. Channing. I’ll come out and let you know when you can see Jacob, okay?
As Reid exited the waiting room, he felt a hand on his shoulder. He didn’t need to turn around to know who it was.
Reid…wait.
Look at me, please.
Reid turned around and his heart turned over in his chest at the sight of Luke’s beautiful face. My God, the man was almost ethereal, he was so gorgeous.
Luke…I need to get back in there. Greg was finishing up when I left and I want to make sure everything went smoothly.
Luke lifted his right hand and brought two fingers to his own lips, kissing them, before reaching out and feathering them over Reid’s.
I just want you to know that you are incredible, Dr. Reid Oliver.
And I’m going to make sure that you never forget it.
With that, Luke slowly backed away before turning around to reenter the waiting room.
As Reid shakily turned back in the direction of the operating room, he saw Greg standing in the corridor, clearly having taken in the scene with Luke. Reid couldn’t help but feel uncomfortable with Greg witnessing such an intimate moment and he hoped that his face didn't betray the fact that he had, once again, been stunned by Luke Snyder.
What?
Greg put his hands up.
Hey, I didn’t say a word.
Jacob Snyder is in recovery right now.
How does it feel to be rock star once again?
Reid bowed his head and looked up at Greg with his crooked smile.
I have to tell you, it feels pretty fucking great. I didn’t let myself realize how much I missed this.
But, seriously, the biggest high for me is knowing that Jacob should make a full recovery. I needed that to be true more than I needed to be a kick-ass surgeon again.
Greg put his arm around Reid’s shoulders.
I have to tell you that it’s very intriguing to see you acting like a human being instead of a machine.
Although…I do miss the machine in one way…God you could go for hours.
Reid’s head snapped up.
What are you doing, Greg?
Greg’s hand moved up to the back of Reid’s head.
You know what I’m doing, Reid. Look, you’ve got your mojo back and it’s sexy as hell.
We could be something here. Know one else “gets” us the way we do each other. We’re like two halves of the same whole.
I can make you happy, Reid. We can make each other very happy.
Reid tried to move out from Greg’s hand, to put some distance between them. He didn’t want to hurt the guy, but he had to put a stop to this.
Oh my God, Greg.
Don’t start this again. You and I were never good together. We were never anything together at all. We had regular sex and we periodically managed to carry on a conversation, but that was about the extent of it.
Greg’s jaw clenched and he audibly sighed.
This is about Luke Snyder, right?
Christ, Reid, didn’t you tell me that he went back to his old boyfriend? Do you really want to be that guy…trying to get with someone who's not available?
I’ve been there, in fact, it seems that I'm there right now and, let me tell you, it sucks.
It was then that Greg noticed the look in Reid’s eyes.
Holy fuck. You're don't actually think you're in love with that kid, do you? Fuck that...you only think you love him because you haven't gotten into his pants....you just need to...
Oh my God, Reid, you slept with him, didn't you? Are you fucking out of your mind?
What the hell were you thinking? You‘ve always been so damned logical, this is insane.
Reid pinched the bridge of his nose, wishing he‘d never given Greg any encouragement.
I am not going to have this conversation with you right now. In fact, I’d like to never have this conversation with you.
I need to go check on Jacob.
Reid made his way toward the ICU, Greg’s questions ringing in his head.
What was he thinking? How in the hell did the sight of Luke Snyder drain him of every ounce of logic?
And how in God’s name was he going to live without him?
