Of metaphors and men.

A short, fluffy, random piece of work that came out of nowhere.

Safe for kids of all ages.

Luke cradles the soft, precious thing in his hands, his eyes bright with sunshine.

“So, can I keep it?”

Reid scratches the back of his head, uncertainty written all over his face.

“I - I don’t know, Luke. It’s a huge responsibility.”

Luke grins, almost bouncing on his toes, but his hands are steady.

“I promise to keep it safe.”

Reid’s frown wrinkles his forehead. Layers of disapproving skin worry at Luke.

“What if - what if it gets hurt?”

Luke pouts a little. Inside, he hopes against all hope Reid would believe in him.

“Reid, I promise to take care of it, to nurture and cherish it. Trust me.”

Reid’s head snaps up at those words. Something in his eyes softens at the sight of Luke’s firm but tender grasp.

He nods.

“Okay. You can keep it.”

And that’s how Luke got to keep the stray kitten that had wandered into his front yard.

With the gesture, though, both men knew that something a little more metaphorical was involved in the exchange.

And they lived happily ever after.

Cat and all.
