Disclaimer: I don’t own any of the characters; if I did then things would be different
Is that why he’s been avoiding me, is that why there’s been that atmosphere between us each and every time we’ve been in the same room? All this time have I been mistaking it for something else, possibly something more? Not only am I now wallowing in my own misery but I’ve brought suffering to someone else, Doctor Oliver having to relive memories from long ago, what a fool I’ve been thinking it had been anything else, he’s with someone, he’s been avoiding me because every time he looks at my miserable face it reminds him of the death of his parents, God I’m so stupid.
As if, he’s a mature doctor, fuck that, he’s a neurosurgeon, a brain surgeon Luke, of course it was nothing else, nothing more. But I felt it, I was sure of it, when his hand touched my cheek. Jesus Luke, he was wiping away blood with cotton wool, any skin against skin action was purely accidental. But he looked at me, he looked right at me as he brushed the cotton against my skin, it was more than a doctor caring for a patient, I’m sure of it, he’d looked startled when Kyle had interrupted, if it had just been a normal interaction why had he been so edgy?

“I’m so sorry......if I’d have known........”
Reid narrowed his eyes, completely confused as to where Luke was going with this, if Reid didn’t know better he would put money on Luke apologising any minute “If you’d have known....what?”
“Every time, being in the same room with me....... it must have reminded you......I can’t apologise enough!”
There it was, the apology, apologising for what exactly, for his parents dying, for making Reid feel this, this.........whatever it was he felt each and everytime he looked at this guy and even more so now as his whole posture and appearance made Luke seem small, vulnerable.....? “Why on earth are you apologising......... surely not for my parents death?”
“In all honesty......I knew I made you feel uncomfortable, but I thought maybe.........maybe........, that doesn’t matter now, I should have realised, that, that….. it had nothing to do with......I mean how could it have......how could you…a doctor…my doctor..........towards me....” Luke didn’t know how to say that he thought the doctor had been attracted to him without making the whole situation even more uncomfortable, so he decided the best option was just to stop talking.
Reid gulped, he knew he shouldn’t have taken Kyle’s advice, this was taking him down a path that he did not want to go down and there was no fork to take him off to a different direction, all steps took him in the same damn route, towards Luke, towards those lips, those eyes, that chest which Reid struggled to tear his eyes from, each time Luke glanced away Reid would casually cast his eye upon the skin there, ignoring the bruises, but looking at the flesh beneath, the chiselled muscles. Reid’s only option, to steer him away from this yellow brick road, was to lie, “I have no idea what you are talking about Luke, but if I only give you one piece of advice today let it be this, the only person in this life you can trust is yourself!”
“What? You don’t honestly believe that?” Luke replied, slightly astounded by the doctor’s admission.
“I most definitely do, you’ve already done a great job getting rid of Noah, the person you were then......you need to be him Luke, from now on, no more apologies, no more self pity, no more letting people walk over you...”
“That’s what you did was it? Before your parents death, you were different....it sparked a change in you!”
“No! I’ve always been blessed with this gift, but I can’t deny that it made me more determined, life’s short, why live your life trying to please everyone? It’s your life.......”
“Maybe because if you do that doctor Oliver you end your life with everyone remembering you as being an absolute bastard, don’t you want to die peacefully, knowing that people will always have good things to say about you?”
“Who cares? I certainly don’t! As long as I’m a good Doctor Luke, that’s all I care about and I don’t need a sparkling personality for that. When I’ve been dead fifty years, who’s going to be around to remember who I was?”
“I can’t do that Doctor Oliver, I can’t, what works for one person doesn’t work for everyone, I miss them, I miss them so much and I know that no amount of self wallowing or crying will bring them back, but I can’t help it. I also know that changing who I am because of it won’t either. I don’t want people to talk about me behind my back, which you know all the nurses here do to you, don’t you?”
“I’m fully aware of it.”
“And that doesn’t bother you!”
“Why should it? I don’t care what they think.......... “
“Do you care what I think?”
Silence
“I said do you care...”
“I heard what you said.” Reid made sure he wasn’t making eye contact with Luke “I don’t care what anyone thinks Luke, that includes you!”
Whilst Reid’s eyes were still looking at the floor Luke smiled, for he knew now, his suspicions were confirmed, all the doubts he’d had moments before, were gone, not a single trace of them remained, the doctor cared what he thought and why? There was only ever one reason why someone had an interest in what you thought about them, the doctor liked him.
“Well I’ll tell you anyway Doctor Oliver; I don’t believe that you don’t care, I believe that you do care, but you have lived this way for so long that you don’t know how to be any different and I bet when something happens that makes you question the way you are, you close down, you use your emotional detachment as a defence mechanism, Doctor Oliver can’t get hurt right? Because he doesn’t have feelings......If I give you, Doctor Oliver, one piece of advice today let it be this, everyone has feelings, including you, maybe you’ve become an expert over continued practice at hiding them, burying them, fooling yourself that they don’t exist, but they’re still there, under the surface and if you continue to deny them you’ll regret it.”
“You don’t know what you’re talking about Mr Snyder!” Reid replied and as the er was finished at the end of Snyder Luke felt a slight twinge in his chest, he hadn’t called him Luke, why hadn’t he called him Luke? “I have no regrets; I didn’t come in here to be preached to!” Reid stood to his feet; this had been a complete waste of his time.
“Why did you come in here? If you don’t care about people!”
Reid spun on his feet “I never said that I didn’t care about people, of course I care, I’m a doctor, you’re in my care Mr Snyder, I care about you, I just don’t care what you think, what anyone thinks. I thought I could help you, but clearly you wish to continue, without my help.”
“How can you help me Doctor Oliver? Can you bring my parents back? No! You dealt with it your own way and that worked for you, I can’t alienate people, I need people, I actually like people, talking to people and being in the company of others, to live a life without that is ......well, it’s not a life, it’s an existence. What do you do when you’re not a doctor, Reid....how do you actually live your life?”
“I’m a doctor first Mr Snyder, everything else.........” What everything else, Reid thought as he paused, there wasn’t anything else, he was a doctor, that was his life, as Luke continued to get this, getting everything right, unravelling Reid’s existence for the complete disaster that it was Reid couldn’t help but feel more and more defensive.
“Everything else what.........?” Luke replied standing to his feet also now “Kyle.”
“Kyle? Wha.....wha.....what’s Kyle got to do with this?”
“You must care what he thinks about you, you must feel some kind of attachment to him, or else why are you with him?”
Reid couldn’t stop the words from spilling from his mouth, he heard himself say the words and instantly regretted them “Why do you think that Kyle and I are involved? Everytime, every single time, you bring him up. “
“You and Kyle......you’re not together?”
Reid swallowed.........hard, Luke was walking towards him now, keeping a hand on the bed to keep himself steady, Reid took a couple of slow breathes, calming himself down “No, I don’t know where you got that idea from Luke.” Err, from you Luke thought to himself, but another thought was taking dominance in his thought process at that moment, the thought that Reid was a single man “And anyway, why are you interested?”
“Why do you think, Doctor Oliver, why do you think that I’m interested?”
“To be honest, I don’t presume to know why you are interested in anything and if we’re done here, I do have other patients to see, so excuse me Mr Snyder!”
“Stop calling me that.”
“That’s your name, are we going to have a discussion over that now?”
“My name is Luke, you’ve always called me Luke, but now you’ve started calling me Mr Snyder, it’s cold, it makes me feel cold. “
“Well my advice.... put your shirt back on.” Reid placed his hand to the door handle.
“Don’t run away....Reid.”
Reid turned, placing his back against the door “I’m not running away, as I’ve explained, I have patients to see.”
“You are running away, you can’t get out of the room fast enough, you’re doing exactly what I just said you’d do, you’re being defensive.”
“That’s because I never should have come in here, it was a mistake, I knew I shouldn’t, I knew that I’d........”
“You knew that you’d what?” Luke asked, stepping away from the bed, no longer having the mattress to keep him steady, he walked uneasy on his feet, but managed to walk slowly towards the doctor, now about a foot away, wobbling slightly on his unsteady knees. “That I’d figure you out, I’d see through your facade? Why didn’t you tell me about you and Kyle, you’ve let me believe, all this time, that you were a couple, we’ve spoken about it several times, not once have you corrected me, why did you do that?”
“Err...correction Mr Snyder, we didn’t speak about Kyle and me, you spoke, I never confirmed or denied, you jumped to your own conclusions.”
“But you let me believe” Luke narrowed his eyes at the doctor as he took a small baby step forward, slightly toppling backwards, he reached behind him grabbing onto the bed rail, Reid felt his hand move out instinctively to catch Luke, leaning forwards and as he did Luke righted himself, standing straight, Reid having now filled the gap that had previously been there they were both standing almost impossibly close.
“Sorry.” Luke stated as he lifted his head and their foreheads crashed together.
“You should be, it was your fault.” Reid said almost as a whisper, his head turned to the side so that their foreheads weren’t touching, the obvious thing to do would be to step backwards, Reid knew this, but as much as he willed his legs to they wouldn’t budge. As they began to breath in unison, on the exhale their chests brushed against each other, Reid feeling Luke’s nipples graze him through his shirt.
Luke’s arms were beginning to shake; he was still carrying his body weight by holding onto the bed rail behind him, but he wouldn’t relent, he’d managed to break through his defences, although they’d closed up again around him, at least Luke was in, and whilst he was in, he had no intention of letting Reid get rid of him easily.
“You feel something don’t you?” Luke leaned his head sideways a little, the hairs on their cheeks brushing against each other “You must do or else you’d have moved away from me by now.”
“I don’t know what I feel...”
“Yes you do” Luke turned his head completely now, their eyes locking onto each other, mere inches apart “tell me how I make you feel.” Luke rested his arm against Reid’s, running it up and down the length slowly, gripping tightly to keep him balanced.
Reid glanced upwards as he felt Luke’s hand against his arm, step away Reid, step away, but he couldn’t, he felt trapped, the walls were coming in on him, he felt claustrophic all of a sudden, he couldn’t breathe, his hands felt sweaty and his heart rate increased, all signs, that if Reid had been looking at himself in a medical capacity would have rushed him down to ER immediately. He felt the breath from Luke’s open mouth against his lips, dehydrating them, taking away all of the moisture, he felt like his lips were beginning to shrivel, as the hot breath continued to rage against his mouth.
Luke didn’t wait for an answer, glancing at Reid’s eyes one last time before they were hidden as Luke closed his eyes, he pursed his lips together, moving his head forwards just slightly, for they were already extremely close, he pressed his lips against the doctors, just briefly, testing the waters to begin with, as he pulled backwards a bead of saliva remained between the two, keeping their lips connected through bodily fluids.
As Luke opened his eyes, so did Reid, it was a good sign, Luke deduced, that Reid had closed his eyes, you accepted the kiss if you closed your eyes. He tried to read the doctors face, startled with a hint of pleasure and whilst Luke decided whether he would attempt to kiss him again, Reid had already made his mind up, grabbing around Luke’s back with the arm that didn’t have Luke’s hand attached to it, he placed his palm flat against his spine, pulling him inwards, their lips finding each other again, but this time it was a completely different kind of kiss, passionate.
Luke felt Reid’s hand run through his hair and he winced slightly as he hadn’t washed his hair in days, which wasn’t exactly his fault, his head had been bandaged, but still, he knew that Reid would be feeling the grease between his fingers and with a mixture of pleasure and annoyance Luke groaned into Reid’s mouth as their tongues clashed together.
Reid released a groan also, a deeper, more sensual groan as he continued to keep his lips attached to Luke’s but ran his hands over Luke’s chest, seeking out the bruises, then releasing from the kiss he bent his head downwards, kissing at the first scar, the redness, Reid licked at it slowly, leaving a trail of saliva, not that dissimilar to a snail’s trail, then recovering his steps. Luke’s released his grip from Reid’s arm and took it backwards again, using both hands to hold onto the hospital bed rail to keep him upright, his head backwards, feeling Reid’s tongue brush over his left nipple, Luke hadn’t remembered there being a scar there, and he smiled slightly.
It was at that moment that Luke felt something vibrate against his hips and as Reid looked down between them he knew what it was, it was the doctor’s pager, within an instant Luke saw the look that had been growing in Reid’s eyes disappear, the look of lust and want completely vanished and was replaced with a look of disbelief and regret.
“What am I doing?” Reid remarked as he took a step backwards.
“You know what you’re doing, so do I!” Luke replied, not moving forwards to fill the gap as he feared he would collapse to the floor.
“No……..no, no, no, this is wrong Mr Snyder, I’m your doctor, you’re my patient, I can’t do this!” Reid turned, his hand reached for the door handle and he opened it slightly.
“Can’t do what? Be human?” the minute the words were out of Luke’s mouth he wished he could take them back, he hadn’t wanted to say that, he’d meant it, but not for the words to come out “I’m sorry I didn’t mean that!” Luke lied
“Yes you did! “ Reid replied, turning just his head only, then within a blink of an eye he was gone, the door shut loudly and Luke was alone, removing his tight grip from the bed he allowed his knees to buckle and he crumpled to a heap on the floor and as Reid walked the corridors down to ER he kicked out at an innocent trash can which just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
