"How bad is it?" Alison asked, and then she bit her lip and tried to give Reid doe eyes. It didn't work.
Reid shifted back in his seat, and scratched blunt nails against the nape of Luke's neck. He kept a straight face and told her, "Bad. I was so freaked before taking it, I gained 10 lb from stress eating. I passed, but then, I'm a genius."
Alison's hopeful face fell and had turned an ashen color. "Oh. Excuse me." She slid out of the booth she was sharing with Casey and exited Al's.
Reid's lip twitched, and then he had lost the ability to breath when Luke's elbow embedded itself into his solar plexus.
"Dude, not cool!" Casey scolded
Luke shook his head and murmured about Reid's level of asshatery. Casey started to scoot out of the booth, but Reid stopped him. "I'll go. I'll fix it."
Casey stood and folded his arms across his chest; the better to show off his substantial upper body, and menaced, "You better, man."
Reid had found Alison sitting on a bench, ruining her manicure by chewing on her thumb. "You'll do fine, you know," Reid called out before joining her on the bench. "Back there? That was me being a dick."
She looked distraught and shook her head, "I'm not ready. I mean, what do I know? The only thing I've ever succeeded in was completely screwing up my life. This is just going to be another in a long list of failures."
Tears threatened to spill, and Reid was horrified that he had decided to go out there. But then, he was the cause of this particular meltdown. He rolled his eyes and quickly decided on tough love. Not that it was much of a choice. "Could you not do that tear thing? It's really kind of pointless."
Alison gave him a pissy look, which Reid considered an improvement.
"The MCAT has 144 multiple choice, and two written answers. You spent three years as a nurse, and from what I hear, you weren't that bad. Take my advice: Don't stress about the verbal reasoning; you'll nail that. Concentrate on physical sciences."
Alison turned her head to look at him, "Why are you trying to help me?"
Reid shrugged and smirked. "Honestly? I'm a little scared of your husband." Alison laughed, and Reid said, "This? Passing the MCAT is the easy part. But I'll tell you what, when you pass, that's when the grueling work begins, and the thing you should really fear is the USMLE. Alison's eyes grew wide, and Reid smiled. "If you happen to make it that far, I may be talked into helping you at that point."
"Seriously?" she asked.
"Luke's honor," he answered.
Alison bumped shoulders with him and said, "I'd be pleased to have your guidance, Dr. Oliver."
Reid bumped her back. "If you make it that far, Mrs. Hughes, that means you're not a total loss.
