Reflections of a bitter rationalist on Yin and Yang Part I
Well, he’d known them for quite a while.
Coming to Oakdale Memorial years ago he’d met ‘Yang’ at his job interview, and had been impressed by his soon to be chief for a lot of reasons.
First of all Dr.Reid Oliver was skilled, competent and well known, in the second place he was exceptionally good looking and in the third place Spencer was impressed by his clear and unsappy professionalism. Skipping Spencer’s brilliant references he’d told him: “I only need 100% professionals in my team, so if you were the type to complain about too long hours, too many surgeries and too less fun, you’ve wasted your time coming here.”
A man to his taste.
Because Spencer Singer called himself a rationalist and he was one. And he was very professional too.
And that was what was needed in the operating room. Kindheartedness, teary pity didn’t the patients any good. Feelings were obstacles when it came to challenges a top neurosurgeon faced every day. And Spencer was a top, from every point of view.
Well he had to learn something the hard way however: He couldn’t top Reid Oliver - anywhere.
After 25 successful, flawless surgeries he’d almost messed up a particularly difficult one. Unable to stop the enormous bleeding in a 10 years old girl’s brain suddenly an unexpected voice took over:
“Move!”
Only one word, clear, unmistakable, tolerating no dissent.
So he moved and his chief took over, stopped the bleeding and saved the girl’s life.
Afterwards Reid told him: “Such things happen. Don’t drown in self-pity; try to be better next time.”
But he’d smiled, a small, a crooked smile leaving Spence with wrong conclusions:
Maybe Yin and Yang’s marriage wasn’t so stable!
God! “Yin”! Learning about his chief being married had been a very unpleasant moment!
He’d met Yin on his second or third day in Oakdale. He would have overlooked the young blonde guy if latter wouldn’t have rushed into the chief’s office without knocking - a huge bag from a local diner in his hand.
Maybe he was Oliver’s personal delivery service. He’d already learned that Dr. Oliver had his antics.
Only the deli-boy didn’t leave the office anymore.
Just as Spence headed towards said office, because he had to ask his chief something important he was held back by a colleague.
“I think it’s a very bad idea to bother Dr. Oliver now.” Susan Steward grinned.
“Why because he can’t be interrupted wolfing his lunch?”
“No, because his husband is with him right now. And since Luke has been out of town for a week, trust me you won’t like Reid’s reaction if you’ll dare…”
Spence wasn’t sure if he’d ever been unable to reply to anything in his whole life. But he was now.
Holy Shit! Reid Oliver was gay - that wasn’t a surprise, Spence always recognized his kind - even if Oliver wasn’t the obvious type.
BUT he was married. To a boy.
Only a day later Spencer learned that ‘the boy’ was kind of a tycoon and had already reached the magical number of 30.
So Spence had to postpone his fantasies including his lean auburn curly-head chief squirming under him calling his name.
