Warrior Reid
Every now and then Luke looks at Reid and reflects on their life. He can’t believe how lucky he was to find this man and give him a chance. He was quite the dragon at first breathing fire at everyone around him, especially at Luke. Even now people wonder how Luke can stand being with such a rude, insensitive, egotistical jerk. Luke just smiles at them knowing that there was another side to him.
Even a dragon can’t breathe fire constantly. Luke began to see glimpses of what was beneath the fire. It was then he realized he had it all wrong. Reid wasn’t the evil dragon. He was a warrior wearing a protective armor. Beneath that armor was the most caring sensitive man Luke had ever met. He defended the lives of his subjects, the patients, against the real dragons in his kingdom, illness and injury. Luke saw how seriously he took that role. He grew to appreciate that the warrior wore the shield of armor to protect himself from the most fierce injury of all, emotional injury, so he could be the best warrior in the kingdom.
The burden of the heavy armor suit was exhausting. Luke realized the warrior needed a place to remove that burden and still feel safe. The warrior wanted Luke to be that place. The warrior exposed his true nature to Luke and Luke fell in love with him.
So Luke laughs to himself when people ask how he can be with Reid for they only see the fire breathing dragon. Luke knows he is anything but the dragon. He is the knight in shining armor and Luke considers himself to be the luckiest man in the world to know the warrior beneath.
