Alone Time

“We’ll think about it, Mom.”

Lily, her hands on her hips, glanced between Luke and Reid. “You promise?”

“Yes,” Luke said quickly. He turned sideways to look at Reid, talking to Reid with his eyes, begging him to nod. “Right?”

Reid, leaning against the kitchen counter, undid his tie and, as always, did what Luke said and nodded. Luke rewarded him with a cookie from a tray that sat on the table. Reid nodded some more. “We promise,” he added in between bites. That earned him a bright smile from Lily and two more cookies from Luke.

Lily leaned toward the table as she scribbled something on a notepad. “I just think it’d be good for us to do this together. Now that your dad and I are together again, we’re committed to being a family, all of us,” she said as she faced Luke and Reid, “including you, Reid, since you are now part of this family, whether you like it or not.”

“He likes it,” Luke said, winking at Reid.

Reid nodded. Luke gave him another cookie.

Lily pointed behind her. “I left the address there if you two decide to join us. It’s a beautiful house, Luke. It overlooks the ocean, and I know the kids are going to have a great time.” She looked at Reid. “And I know they’ll have an even better time if you’re there. They adore you.”

Reid swallowed the cookie in his mouth. “And I . . . like them.”

“Lily, we gotta go!” Holden shouted as he came into the kitchen.

Lily smoothed her hair. “I’m coming.” She kissed Luke on the cheek and then awkwardly patted Reid’s shoulder. “Think about it, please. We’ll be there until Monday.”

“Bye, guys,” Holden said with a wave as he ushered Lily out.

“Geez, I thought they’d never leave,” Luke said.

Reid ate his last cookie as he nodded. His shift had just ended when he’d received a text from Luke to get over to his house as soon as possible. When he’d arrived, he’d run into the Snyders packing for a weekend trip and Lily urging Luke and Reid to join them. Luke, grinning as usual, had mouthed No way to Reid as Lily was placing the cookies on the tray. Reid had tried not to laugh out loud, concentrating on the cookies instead.

Reid was somewhat surprised that Luke didn’t agree to the trip. He and Reid were still a new couple, and so far, Luke had included -or tried to include-Reid in every Sndyer family event, no matter how much Reid protested.

However, he discovered the real reason Luke had refused the invitation the moment they both heard the Snyder truck leave the driveway. Reid was about to wipe his hands on his pants when Luke almost jumped on top of him.

“What the-”

“Shh,” Luke ordered as he completely removed Reid’s tie off him and began unbuttoning his shirt.

Reid didn’t need to say anything else. He pulled Luke towards him for a hard kiss. “Luke, you’re so-“

“I said no talking, Oliver!” Luke said as he undid Reid’s belt.

“But you always like talking before and-”

Luke silenced him with another hard kiss. “We only have three days before they get back; there’s no time for talking.”

Reid laughed. “Fine by me,” he said before he was pulled out of the kitchen and led upstairs.
