“Are you still worrying about her?” Reid asked, sitting next to Luke on the couch.
“She’s my friend, Reid. The thought of her sleeping around with random guys worries me.”
“But they’re not random; they’re friends, guys she knows,” Reid argued.
“She’s lonely, Reid,” Luke said. He’d recently reconnected with one of his best friends, Jade, when she’d appeared on Luke and Reid’s doorstep the previous day, confessing that she was having the time of her life in strictly sexual relationships with two guys she’d been friends with for over a year to avoid “all the messiness and drama” of the past, as Jade put it. “She wants love but she’s afraid of getting hurt again, and I totally get that.”
“Love?” Reid asked as he propped his feet on the small table in front of the couch and pointed the remote at the TV. “I didn’t hear her say anything about love. She clearly said she’s only wants sex.”
“That’s what she says but it’s not what she means,” Luke said. “I know her, Reid. She wants someone, not someones. And it’s time she settled down. We all have. I have you, Casey has Allison, Will has Gwen, even No-” Luke stopped himself and looked down.
Reid grinned and bumped his shoulder against Luke’s. “Who?”
Luke looked up. “Noah, okay? Even Noah has someone. That’s what Jade needs to find so she’s not all alone anymore.”
“You’re making her sound like an old maid. She’s young, Luke. Let her have fun,” Reid said. “Besides, some people take a good, long while to find the right person.”
Luke sighed and shook his head. “I could never do it, the ‘friends with benefits’ thing.”
Reid glanced at Luke. “Really? Not even when you were madly in love with Kenny-”
“Kevin,” Luke corrected.
“Yeah, him. What if he’d suggested it to you back then? I mean, you two were already bffs,” Reid said with a smirk.
Luke laughed. “No, I wouldn’t have. I wanted his heart, not just his cock.”
“Not even if he’d wanted to do it in the locker room or shower stall or the coach’s office or-”
“Hey, you were watching porn last night, weren’t you?”
“Maybe a little,” Reid confessed. “What else was I supposed to do while you and your little friend were catching up in here? Anyway, going back to this deal, what about with Noah? When he was dating Maddie and you and he were just friends, do you think you two could’ve . . .?”
“Nope. Maddie is my friend. I wouldn’t have done that to her behind her back. And Noah wouldn’t have either.”
“Of course not, even though you two were kissing a lot behind her back, no?” Reid said, lifting an eyebrow.
Luke glared at him.
“What about during the blindness episode before the dashing, handsome neurosurgeon appeared? If Noah only wanted to be friends-with benefits, of course-would you have been able to do that? You still would’ve gotten to be with Noah in some ways,” Reid asked.
Luke shook his head. “It was all or nothing.”
“Oh, yeah, I forget that it’s always all or nothing with you.”
“You’re not complaining.”
Reid shrugged.
Luke caressed a lock of hair above Reid’s ear. “What about you? You’ve done it. Were those relationships satisfying?”
“First, those weren’t relationships of any kind, and second, the men weren’t exactly friends. They weren’t very interesting or . . . friendly.”
“But they were still interesting enough to sleep with you,” Luke teased.
“Their cocks were,” Reid admitted with a grin. “And their asses.” Reid sighed. “They were just hook-ups, Luke, not friendships. At least Jade knows them well enough.
“What about us? Do you think we could’ve just been friends with benefits if I would’ve proposed it?” Luke asked.
“If you’d proposed it? Remind me again who made the first move.”
“Just answer the question, Reid!”
“Well, we weren’t exactly friends, but-”
“But?” Luke interrupted as he waited eagerly for Reid’s answer.
Reid turned back to the TV.
“Reid?”
Reid looked at Luke once more. “No,” he said. “We couldn’t have just been friends with benefits.”
Luke stopped massaging Reid’s head. “Why not?”
“Because with you, it was always all or nothing.”
Luke kissed Reid’s cheek and grinned at him. “I love you.”
“I know.”
“And that’s a great answer,” Luke said, wrapping an arm around Reid’s shoulder.
“I know.”
