“I was only being nice, you know.”
“What?”
“To Noah, earlier, at Java,” Reid says, closing the medical chart in his hands and looking at Luke.
Luke, who’s been sitting with Reid in the on-call room as they wait for news about Chris’s condition, nods slowly. “Okay.”
“But maybe I shouldn’t have been,” Reid says, folding his arms across his chest and sitting back in his chair.
“Reid.”
“Didn’t you hear what he said when you came in? When you asked what we were doing, he said he was passing you along, like if you were some object of his, some possession,” Reid says, his voice loud in the small room.
“I belonged to him for a long time, Reid,” Luke says quietly.
“Yes, but he didn’t own you. Nobody owns you.”
Luke’s mouth releases a grin. “I think my grandmother owns me a little bit. She certainly likes to tell me and my family what to do.”
“Which grandmother?”
“Lucinda.”
Reid chuckles. “I think she owns a little bit of everyone in this town.”
“Even you,” Luke says with a laugh.
Reid nods. “Yeah, I know. I still have to repay her for the Texas board thing.”
Luke stands and walks over to Reid. “But going back to Noah-you’re right, he didn’t own me. He never did.”
Reid stares at him.
“But he did own my heart.”
Reid looks down. “Right.”
“He did, but now you do.”
Reid looks up. “You do?”
“I told you I’m in love with you, Reid,” Luke says. “What part of that didn’t you understand?”
Reid shakes his head. “I, uh, I don’t-I’ve never, I-I don’t know.”
Luke crouches in front of Reid, who remains seated. “That’s what being in love means, Reid, having someone’s heart.” He takes hold of Reid’s hands. "And you have mine."
“Close your eyes,” Reid says.
“What?”
“Close them,” Reid repeats. “I have to tell you something and I don’t want you to look at me while I say it.”
Luke laughs. “Reid, come on!”
“Luke!”
“Okay, fine,” Luke says as he shuts his eyes and waits.
Reid squeezes Luke’s hands and mumbles a few words.
Luke leans forward. “What was that? I couldn’t hear you.”
Reid sighs. “I said that’s the most valuable thing I’ve ever possessed.”
Luke opens his eyes in a flash. He’s about to say something, but Reid stands, disengaging his hands from Luke’s.
“Okay, that’s enough of that,” Reid says, clearing his throat as he straightens his white coat. “Ready to go back out there?”
Luke bites back a smile as he nods. He follows Reid to the door. Reid opens it, but before stepping out, he looks at Luke. “Just so you know, you own my heart. You have for a while now.”
Luke leans in and kisses Reid briefly. He then pulls back and rewards Reid with his brightest smile. He’s thrilled that he no longer has to wait to hear Reid’s ‘I love you’ declaration as he’d requested of him earlier outside of Java. Reid just gave it to him.
Reid rolls his eyes but leans in as well and kisses Luke, a little longer this time. “Guess we belong to each other now,” Reid jokingly mutters.
“Is that so bad?” Luke teases back.
Reid smiles and takes Luke’s hand in his, leading him out of the room. “No, it’s not bad at all.”
