Shuffling Through Darkness
Luke finished his chapter and shut off his reading light. Luke sat and listened to the ice storm raging outside. The power had gone out an hour ago. The house was rapidly cooling down. The complete darkness of the room swallowed him whole. The total absence of light reminded Luke of Noah’s blindness. It had been over two years since the accident. Luke thought back to how Noah behaved pushing Luke away insisting on doing everything himself.
Quit trying to help me Luke.
I have to learn to do things on my own.
How am I going to learn if you keep hovering over me?
Luke I’m not in the mood. Don’t you get it? I don’t want your pity sex.
Luke stood up in the pitch black room. Was this what it was like for Noah? He shuffled slowly to the kitchen. He knew where every wall and every door was by heart. Blindly he reached for the refrigerator handle. He clumsily felt for the water pitcher. He grabbed it and opened the spout. He walked his hands along the counter to the glass cabinet and grabbed one. How would he know when it was full? He slowly poured and listened to the pitch change. He put a finger in the glass and felt for the water level. Proud of his accomplishment he drank his water and managed to get the pitcher back in the same spot in the fridge.
Luke shuffled slowly along keeping his hand on the wall. He found the bathroom and managed to get ready for bed without a hint of light. Luke could understand Noah’s need to do tasks on his own and feel that sense of accomplishment, though he also acknowledged that tonight was nothing in comparison to what he went through.
Luke shuffled blindly feeling for the edge of the bed. With the heat out he was shivering with cold. He undressed and slipped under the covers. He smiled as a warm hand reached for him and pulled him close.
“Come here and let me warm you up,” Reid said huskily. Reid wrapped his leg over Luke’s. He pulled Luke close and spooned tightly to Luke’s back. Reid peppered soft kisses along Luke’s neck and shoulder.
Luke sighed happily. Thank God Noah Mayer was an idiot. His need for independence pushed Luke to the man he was meant to be with. Even though Noah was the blind one, it was Luke who had been shuffling through the darkness searching for the beacon of love’s light. His name was Reid Oliver.
