FAMILY HERITAGE - April 2018

Reid was walking down the hall of the home he shared with Luke when he heard his father-in-law’s voice coming from inside a nearby room.

“Regardless of genetics or bloodlines, the two of you are Grimaldis. And you will carry on all of the best traditions of the Grimaldis.”

Reid wondered if Damian was referring to his hot, hot accent. ‘Cause as far as Reid was concerned, that was the best tradition of the Grimaldis. He sometimes enjoyed convincing Luciano to use an accent during playtime. The Klingon accent during the ‘A Vulcan and a Klingon Meet at a Space Disco’ scenario was definitely less sexy than the Maltese accent during the ‘Maltese Playboy Seduces Virgin Neurosurgeon’ scenario.

“We may have had a slight history of Machiavellian power struggles, madness and flexible ethics,” continued Damian. “But no family is perfect. Even during times of our most severe moral decay, we’ve maintained a sense of noblesse oblige with those less fortunate than us. Which is everyone.”

Reid barely prevented himself from snorting while he continued eavesdropping.

“Your father, Luciano is the epitome of all of the positive aspects of the Grimaldis. You’ll inherit an enormous amount of wealth and power. He’ll teach you how to use both wisely. He’ll also teach you how to live a life with an open heart.”

Reid nodded silently.

“Your great grandmother, Lucinda, will teach you how to wage war on your enemies. Sometimes, it’s a kindness to decimate your foes outright instead of taking pity on them and allowing them to continue their plotting.”

Reid wondered if Damian’s mother had read Sun Tzu’s The Art of War to him as a bedtime story when he was a tot.

“Your great grandmother, Emma, will touch you the importance of committing to your values. And hopefully she’ll teach you her pot roast secrets.”

Reid suspected that the revelation of Emma’s pot roast secrets would involve sacred oaths of secrecy.

“Your grandmother Lily will teach you to never be afraid to love.”

Reid winced at that one. Hopefully his daughters would be a little more discriminating than Hot Mom.

“Your grandfather, Holden, will teach you that you can love family that you choose just as fiercely and powerfully as the family with whom you share bloodlines.”

Reid was reminded of Luke having once told him that Damian had always been careful to not be critical of Holden to him when he was a little boy. Damian was still careful not to criticize Holden to Luke. He was willing to criticize Holden to Reid. Reid really tried not to laugh whenever Damian referred to Holden as the hairy arsed stable boy.

“Your father, Reid, will teach you confidence and blunt honesty. I’ll teach you how to block the inevitable punches that are thrown your way.”

Reid laughed and entered the room. “No boxing lessons until they’re at least six months old.”

Aww, this is sweet, to imagine the children inheriting a little bit of everyone. And Damian talking to them all about it is such a lovely image.

Oh, this part is fabulous!

The whole thing is great!

Thanks so much! Given the way Damian was raised with the idea of the overwhelming importance of FAMILY, it always made me sad that he had so little time with his son. In my world, he's gonna get a chance to be a very hands-on granddad.

Oh I like this. I can't argue with a single word Damian said. I'm glad he's out of prison.

Thank you! I think that someday, I'm gonna write a fic about Damian's time in prison. I figure he'd be a Big Fish there.

This would be amazing especially remembering that Colonel Mayer is in there too. I have a WIP that touches on this (if I ever finish it)

Oh, please finish this! It sounds awesome and Nuke's fathers both being in prison--ha, that's funny and sad.

Its only a portion of my very long fix it fic. We find out a little bit of what happened in the prison, after the fact, but we never actually see the prison. I will say that everyone at the prison feels the same way about the Colonel as the rest of Oakdale.

Aww. I like the idea of Damian have a role in his grandchildren's lives.

I hate how the show ruined his character, so I really enjoy fics in which he has a good relationship with Luke.

Thanks very much!

I never understood why the writers decided that just randomly demolishing characterization was the same thing as good drama. I'm gonna have to figure out a way to bring back Vienna too!

Thanks so much!

"Thanks to Playtime, Reid now knows that he can insult nerds in Klingon by saying, "Hab SoSlI' Quch!" For some reason, stating that one's mother has a smooth forehead is an unbearable insult."

Oh geez. Hot Mom. I snorted so loud my husband gave me a funny look. Then it got worse when I read 'hairy arsed stable boy'. Thank you.

Thank you!

I love how Holden hasn't been a stable boy for about 30 years but that it's referenced so much in fanfic. Nobody ever seems to reference other characters' former professions.
