“Are you going to be okay?”
Luke nodded as he walked Reid back to his car. He squeezed Reid’s hand to assure him.“I’ll be fine, Reid. I’m used to this.”
As Reid leaned against the driver’s side of his car, he shook his head in amusement. “Will I ever be invited to a wedding where people actually marry?”
Luke laughed as he stood in front of Reid, patting Reid’s shoulders. “Maybe after a couple more.”
“Great.”
“I know you didn’t want to come today, but I’m glad you did.Thank you, Reid,” Luke said.
Reid cautiously leaned toward Luke, hoping he wouldn’t turn away as he’d done earlier that day in Holden and Molly’s bridal suite. Thankfully, Luke smiled and pressed his lips over Reid’s. He put his hands on the back of Reid’s head and neck to pull him closer. “My pleasure,” Reid said in between kisses.
“No, I mean it, Reid,” Luke said. “I know you hate weddings and you were tired and you’d rather be anywhere else and-”
“Luke, shh,” Reid whispered, holding Luke’s face in his hands. “It’s no big deal.”
“It is, actually.”
“What do you mean?”
Luke sighed. “You know how crazy my life has been. It still is. I think more than anything I wanted you to come to this wedding to help me erase some bad memories, very bad memories.”
Reid pulled Luke against him. Though used to hearing the most outrageous stories from Luke’s past, and thinking that nothing else can surprise him, Reid prepared himself to comfort Luke as he always did after Luke relived another painful memory. “Tell me,” Reid whispered.
“Weddings are absurdly crazy, as you now know,” Luke began.
Reid nodded.
“And the last wedding of Molly’s I’d been to actually happened but not without some drama.”
“Just how many times has this woman been married?”
“As much as the others,” Luke replied.
“Of course.”
“I was still a kid and it was right after me and my family returned from Malta after I’d been kidnapped.”
Uh-oh, it’s the “k” word, Reid thought. Here we go again.
“Anyway, I didn’t want to hang out with the adults so I was inside the house playing by myself-”
Reid smirked slyly. “Wait, what? Playing by yourself?”
Luke slapped Reid’s shoulder. “Oh, gross, Reid, I was, like, ten. And I meant actual ‘playing.’”
Reid laughed. “Go on.”
“So yeah, I was inside the house and Dante, Damian’s brother, found me there and tried to kidnap me again.”
“And where were your incredibly astute and selfless parents at this time?” Reid asked sarcastically.
“Give them a break,” Luke said. “They were enjoying the wedding with everyone else so no one noticed Dante sneaking in. But then my aunt Rose walked in. Dante panicked, he grabbed me and tried to carry me out. I was really scared, Reid.” Luke shuddered.
Reid put his arms around Luke’s waist. “It’s okay.”
Luke sighed. “Then things really got out of hand. Rose hit Dante and we both escaped and ran outside, but then Dante somehow got a hold of Rose again and held her at knifepoint in front of everyone.”
“And where was the incredibly perceptive Oakdale PD at this time?” Reid said with a snort. “Probably enjoying the champagne like everyone else?”
Luke smiled. “Actually, yeah, Margo and Jack and Hal were all guests at the wedding.”
Reid chuckled.
“And then, um, Dante threatened to kill my aunt unless I went with him.”
“Luke.”
“Yeah, but thankfully, someone shot Dante and that was the end of it.”
“And you saw that?”
Luke nodded sadly.
No matter how long Reid lived in Oakdale, he now knew he’d never get used to all the crazy shenanigans. He was sorry, though, that Luke had lived through so much and was used to it all. Reid touched Luke’s face. “It’s okay, Luke. You’re okay.”
“I know. Thanks to you, I now have a good wedding memory even if my dad and Molly aren’t going to be living happily ever after.”
“I’m glad I came,” Reid said. And he was.
“And look, um, I’m sorry about earlier. I want to, Reid, believe me.”
“I know, Luke.” And he did.
“So I’m guessing after today, you won’t want to attend anymore weddings?”
“As long as I’m with you, I think I can survive a few more. But how about this: if there’s even a slight chance that there’ll be gunshots or a runaway groom at the wedding, you won’t make me go?”
“It’s a deal.”
