Reid came home to find Luke stringing the last lights on the Christmas tree in their living room. Luke was bending over to wrap the lights on the lowest branches. He bounced in rhythm to Donny Hathaway’s “This Christmas.” Luke’s jeans pulled tight against his backside. His shirt rode up exposing more than a hint of pale flesh and the black elastic waistband of his underwear. Reid stood back a moment and enjoyed the view.
Luke turned to see Reid checking him out. “Hey, enjoying yourself?”
“I am”
Luke stoop up straight and Reid came over and gave Luke’s shoulders a squeeze. Luke gave Reid a peck on the lips.
“You’re home just in time to help me hang the ornaments.” Luke bounced on his toes and smiled brightly.
Reid let out a long sigh. “What do you want me to do?”
“Oh come on Reid. I know you hate Christmas, but humor me a little.”
Reid opened the ornament box on the sofa and handed Luke a red ball. “I don’t hate Christmas. I just don’t understand why so many people lose their minds shopping and decorating just because the calendar says December 25th is coming.”
“Because it’s fun. It’s the time of year to think about everyone in your life that you love and to give them something they may want or need to make them happy.”
Luke hung the ornament and Reid handed him another. “Have you really taken a look around out there Luke? Little kids are screaming being put in a bearded stranger’s lap. Adults are getting into fights over parking spaces at the shopping center. People are growling and fussing about long lines to buy crap that their loved one will be waiting in another long line to return after Christmas. I don’t see much joy to the world at the strip mall.”
“You’re just focusing on the commercial stuff. What about the story of the struggling family who received a reliable used car from a complete stranger? How about the smile on a child’s face when he comes down the stairs on Christmas morning to a shiny new bike?” Luke grasped a branch and hung the next gold ball. He turned and took the next one from Reid.
“Of course there are sappy feel good stories. The point is not everyone wants to celebrate and be bombarded with…” Reid paused. His thoughts were distracted by a particularly strange looking ornament. He held it high for Luke to see. “What the hell is this thing?”
“That is an angel.”
“Really? It looks like a wad of sticks. Did Ethan make it?”
Luke snatched it out of Reid’s hand blushing. “No, I did. My mom gave it to me last year. It was the first ornament I made for her when I was in grade school.”
“She must have been happy to finally unload it on you.”
Luke stomped his foot and huffed admiring his handiwork. “I like my angel. It’s a symbol of my past Christmases.”
He took it to the tree and put it up high. Reid didn’t give him any more snappy comments. The room was silent except for the crooning of Bing Crosby in the background. Luke turned to take the next ornament and found Reid gazing fondly at the crystal orb in his hand. It was Reid’s present to Luke last year. Reid gently fingered the gold script: “Our First Christmas Together 2010”.
Luke put his hand over Reid’s. “That was my favorite present ever,” he whispered. Reid’s eyes met Luke’s as Luke continued. “This ornament is a symbol of my future Christmases I will spend with you.”
Reid smiled up at him and stood. “Let’s hang this one together shall we?”
They walked over to the tree. Luke held an eye level branch while Reid hooked on their ornament. Luke turned on the lights. With their arms around each other they stepped back and gazed at their tree. Reid gently pressed his lips to Luke’s and let them linger before softly resting their heads together.
“I love you.”
“I love you too. Merry Christmas, Reid.”
“Merry Christmas to you too, Luke.”

The ornament is such a sweet touch. And LOLing at the angel Luke made in school.

Reid has that snarky exterior, but he really is a sap at heart.
