Luke was reading through a business proposal from the Marketing Department of Grimaldi Shipping. Reid was reading through a research grant proposal that he was going to submit to the NHI on behalf of Oakdale Memorial. They were very important and busy men. If anyone else at Java noticed that they were also playing footsies, they didn’t mention anything.
Luke’s youngest sister Natalie walked into the coffee shop. When she noticed Luke and Reid at a corner table, she smiled and made her way over to them.
She leaned down and gave her brother’s still kind of new-ish boyfriend a hug. She liked the fact that Reid looked less surprised every time she hugged him. She walked around the table and gave her brother a big hug and smooch which he enthusiastically returned. She was sure that Luke had been born a hugger. He probably hugged the other babies in the neonatal care unit.
She sat down at the empty chair at their table.
“Skipping school?” asked Reid. “Are you a juvenile delinquent?”
“Yep,” smiled Natalie. “But I’m sure that there’s some bright, young teacher with unorthodox methods that shock the fuddy-duddy establishment that’ll be along anytime now to show me the error of my ways and to instill a love of learning in me.”
“Maybe he or she will do it through the power of song,” offered a grinning Luke.
“That would be awesome!” said Natalie.
“Teacher In Service day?” asked Luke referring to the day each semester where students had the day off of school while their teachers got caught up with paperwork. Or possible played foosball in the teacher’s lounge.
“Yep,” nodded Natalie. She twisted a lock of hair around one of her fingers. “Luke, are you doing anything next Friday night?”
“I’ll be in New York on Grimaldi business. Why?”
Natalie frowned sadly. “It’s nothing important.”
“Nat?” asked Luke with concern.
“It’s the Father-Daughter dance,” sighed Natalie. “And Dad can’t go because there’s a big horse auction.”
“Let me make some phone calls and see if I can rearrange some stuff. Maybe I can postpone the trip to New York,” said Luke while rubbing her back.
“No!” cried Natalie. “It’s just a dumb dance.”
“You and Sage and your friends have been looking forward to going all semester,” said Luke. “I know that I’m not Dad but I bet you and I can have a great time together.”
“I’d feel too bad if you had to cancel your meetings,” said Natalie.
“If you can substitute dorky big brothers for dads at this Father-Daughter dance, can you substitute brilliant and handsome neurosurgeons for dads?” asked Reid.
Natalie gasped. “Really?” she asked hopefully.
“Um, sure,” shrugged Reid.
Natalie sprang from her chair and enveloped Reid in a hard hug.
“Thank you so much! There’s going to be lots of food and I promise I won’t make you socialize with anyone dumb. I’ve got to go tell Sage that I’ll be able to go after all,” said Natalie cheerfully. She ran halfway out of the coffee shop before she turned around and ran back to hug Reid and Luke again.
Luke looked at Reid dumbstruck. “I always think that I couldn’t possibly be in love with you any more than I already am. Then you do or say something that just floors me and I’m proven wrong.”
Reid shifted uncomfortable. “Whatever, Snyder.”
Luke sighed happily.
“Luke?” asked Reid.
“Yeah?”
“Do you think you could teach me to dance before your trip to New York?”
Luke looked at Reid dumbstruck. “I always think that I couldn’t possibly be in love with you any more than I already am. Then you do or say something that just floors me and I’m proven wrong.” -->Luke took the words right out of my mouth!!! Thank you!
