“You should tell Reid.”

“No, I can’t. It wouldn’t be fair.”

“Nothing in life is fair. That’s a child’s dream, an illusion. I think you’re making a mistake, darling.”

“Well, it’s my mistake to make,” Luke said firmly.

Lucinda made a disapproving noise. “Young people. Nothing is too late until you are dead and buried. Take it from me. Tell him. I’m sure he’d help. For all the man’s faults, Reid still has feelings for you.”

Feelings for him? Luke winced. Not long ago, Reid was craving him morning, noon and night. He was licking every part of Luke’s skin, making him go crazy, telling him he loved him. Now, maybe, Reid had leftover feelings for him? Luke swallowed the bile that rose to the back of his throat.

“I’ll think about it, Grandmother.”

“Do.” Lucinda gave him a hard stare. “Remember our deal to be honest with each other. Are you taking care of yourself? The truth?”

“Of course,” Luke met her eyes and smiled reassuringly. “I’m fine.”

When had he become such a good liar?

“Thank you for coming today, darling. I know you don’t like to spend a lot of time here at Memorial, not since you and Reid…”

“I’m happy to be here if you need me,” Luke quickly cut her off. He glanced at his watch. “You’d better get to your checkup, Grandmother. This will make five years cancer-free, right?” At Lucinda’s nod, Luke smiled and gave her a giant hug. “I’m so glad,” he whispered.

“Now, now,” Lucinda squeezed him back. “Don’t make my mascara run in the middle of Memorial; it wouldn’t do for my image.“ She drew back and quickly dabbed a finger at her eye. “I'll meet you right after the appointment. We’ll celebrate. Okay? What do say? Should we meet at Al’s for some milkshakes?”

“Great. But my treat.”

“Fine. I can’t remember the last good looking man to buy me some dessert. I’ll take you up on it.“

Luke grinned. “I’ll be there.”

Lucinda straightened her shoulders back and walked determinedly into the oncology wing, her high heels clicking down the hall. Luke forced his smile to remain on his lips until she was out of sight.

4:15

Luke knew he should just head to Al’s and wait there for Lucinda; he should get out of the hospital. But he also knew what happened every day, barring any emergencies, at around 4:30. He knew everything about Reid’s routine. There had been a time when Luke knew Reid’s daily schedule better than Reid had. “Really, Mr. Snyder?” Reid would say, seeing Luke dogging his steps, coming to bring him a fat, condiment-filled sandwich or to suggest sneaking into Reid’s office for a quickie, a goofy grin at his lips. “Do you really have nothing better to do than mange my life?” His eyes would be gleaming as he’d scolded Luke, his hand already cupping Luke’s face. As if being pulled by an invisible rope, Luke turned in the direction of the neurology wing, and Luke hovered in the corner, waiting. From where he stood, Luke had an eagle eye view of the break room.

4:30

Reid was in scrubs, his hands jangling at his side, the way it did when he was lost in thought. Luke knew he probably was considering his last patient by the small furrow of worry between his brows. Absently, Reid put a few quarters in the vending machine for some chips.

I never could cure him of his junk food habit.

Reid bent down, rummaging into the machine, and pulling out his snacks. Luke stared longingly at his ass. He wanted to flattened his palms against it, slide his fingers across the muscles there.

A flush rushed up his neck. This was stupidity. Reid wanted nothing to do with him now. Luke had made certain of it. Luke watched Reid chewing, his lips smacking loudly together.

He remembered the touch of Reid’s lips on his skin, the first time Reid had seen him fully naked.

“God, you’re fantastic,“ Reid murmured. Luke had eagerly grabbed him, running his fingers up to the nape of Reid’s neck and meeting his hot gaze.

“You too.”

There had been only the sound of their kisses then-long, drawn out drags of each other’s lips. Their bodies were chest to chest, arms vined around each other. Reid had been so forceful, his body moving urgently above Luke’s own, pinning him down to the bed, stuffing Luke’s hole full beyond belief. But his kisses had stayed sweet, licking at Luke’s bottom lip, nipping and sucking at his mouth, as they groaned and panting together. There had been nobody else in the world that night.

If only it could have stayed that way.

Pain stabbed Luke’s heart so badly that he clutched it. He saw Reid pause, his body growing taunt, and he started to turn his head in Luke’s direction. Like a frightened rabbit, Luke hid, ducking low. He knew Reid had felt him, that Reid was coming over. And Luke couldn’t, he just couldn’t face him.

“Doctor Oliver,” Ali called from across the corridor.

“One minute.”

“You told me to get you. It’s Mr. Lawson.”

Luke heard Reid’s muffled curse. “He’s crashing?”

“You’d better come.”

Even hidden from his sight, Luke felt his connection to Reid, like something he could touch. His gut churned, and Luke had to restrain his impulse to chase after Reid, to hurl himself into Reid’s arms. A lump formed in his throat, like a tangible reminder of all he’d lost. Luke heard Reid and Ali walk away. He’d no doubt that Mr. Lawson would make it if he were in Reid’s capable hands.

They use to be hands that held me safe too.

Now the whole world felt cracked open. Luke felt like he was inching his way across the chasm on a tightrope. Nothing would ever feel safe again to him, not when he’d created his own mess, his own personal hell. He’d let Reid go. And it was too late to turn back.

After confirming her good test results, Lucinda had been in rare form at Al’s, challenging Henry to a milkshake making competition and actually scooping out ice-cream and making something she called ‘egg crèmes’. Luke was glad she was happy again. It had been a long time since he’d seen her taking command of things and barking orders, even if it was just over ice cream.

“Luke, be a dear and run by my house? I’d like a change of clothes, just ask the maid. I can’t leave Henry here with his rather droopy banana and poor excuse for a sundae. “

“I’ll match my banana to your any day, “Henry looked over his shoulder. ”Or I’ll get Barbara to match you. She’s in the kitchen with the fruit.“

“Darling, I’m not surprised that Barbara holds all your bananas.”

Luke left them bickering, and drove out to the mansion. When he went inside in search of Lucinda’s maid, Beth, he skidded to a halt near the hallway of the drawing room.

“What’re you doing here?”

Reid looked him over, and Luke’s heart pounded, his palms began to sweat. “I was invited,” Reid answered, chewing on some crackers. “What about you?”

Luke couldn’t speak. He was going to kill his grandmother, and then he was going to thank her profusely.

“I’m sorry,” Luke said. He ran right into Reid’s arms. “I’ve been sick and covering it up. I lied about why I left. I didn’t want to burden you with it all.

“I know,” Reid said, burying his face in the crook of Luke’s neck. “And I’m going to kick your ass, Mr. Snyder. “ Reid ran his fingers down Luke’s face. “Right after I kiss it- “

Sorry-I forgot italics with Luke’s thoughts (comment fic= a pain for me to post, lol! Whoops)

Thanks! I think the end was pretty lame. I should have expanded but... That's what I get for doing a comment fic off the top of my head. I had no plan! I was just in the mood for angst.

Like how Lucinda encourages Luke to tell Reid the truth. And sneaky!Lucinda forcing them to meet up and finally talk--yes!

Oh, Luke, I hate when he thinks everything's falling apart. Good thing he does tell Reid.

“I know,” Reid said, burying his face in the crook of Luke’s neck. “And I’m going to kick your ass, Mr. Snyder. “ Reid ran his fingers down Luke’s face. “Right after I kiss it- “
LOVE THIS. They make up so well.

Ouch! That is the definition of pain. Loved it all.

Thanks so much! I was in the mood for angst! The end was a bit rushed. I was afraid a simple comment fic was turning into something way too long, but I'm glad you enjoyed it.
