Okay, forget that whole dying away business for a while! I've read this stuff for my time-based art class, and thought these things were pretty interesting in terms of recognizing Fate as an author:
10 basic Story Types:
1.) The Romance: A character is seen to be lacking something or someone - the object of desire. The character struggles to overcome barriers between herself and the object of desire and succeeds in overcoming them. The resolution comes when the character unites with the object of desire.
2.) The Unrecognized Virtue: The character with a virtue falls in love with a powerful character. The character seeks to prove that he is desirable to the powerful character but is undermined. The characterattempts to solve a problem for the powerful character and, in doing so, his virtue is finally recognized.
3.) The Fatal Flaw: The character has a quality that brings successand enables him to gainopportunities which he uses for his own gain at the expense of others, but when he recognizes the damage he has done he sets himself a new challenge. However, the quality that brought him success leads to failure in the next challenge.
4.) The Debt That Must Be Repaid: The character wants something or someone who will possible give her what she wants - at a price. The character agrees to pay the price later and pursues her original desire. The character attempts to avoid settling the debt but is finally confronted and the debt must be repaid.
5.) The Spider and the Fly: The character wants to make other characters do his bidding, but, having no power to force them, devises a plan to trap them into doing it. The character successfully executes the plan, achieves his initial goal and then faces a new future.
6.) The Gift Taken Away: The character has a gift which he loses and seeks to regain. The pursuit of the gift leads him into a new situation to which she/he become reconciled.
7.) The Quest: The character sets out to find someone or something, accepts the challenge, searches for and finds the someone or something. He is then rewarded for success in the quest.
8.) The Rites of Passage/Coming of Age: The character has reached the next "age" in her life. She encounters chellenges which require her to reach beyond what she already knows. Her success reflects her maturation into the new phase of her life.
9.) The Wanderer: The character arrives in a new place and discovers a problem associated with it. In facing the problem she reveals why she left the last place, then attempts to move on again.
10.) The Character Who Cannot Be Put Down: The character demonstrates his prowess in a situation but then faces a bigger challenge, which he accepts. He succeeds by triumphing over a range of antogonistic forces.
Some of these are pretty unexpected. Some of them sound familiar. I'm trying to figure out what she wants of me... Perhaps to violate every single one of these givens? Something to think about.
