Nice weather we're having, isn't it? Shame about those curses, though. A few have been particularly unforgiving. What was the worst curse you've ever had to live through, hm ( Read more... )

Root cellar, below the cabin. It should be secure enough, thanks to the Wolsbane. I couldn't think of anywhere else.

All right.

Unless you knew of a better option. For next time, at least. I wouldn't leave the house right now without a burlap sack firmly over my head.

It's not safe, with the children. It's not that I doubt my own work - but they shouldn't be exposed to getting used to the idea of tame werewolves, particularly considering their futures...

I don't imagine you're in a state to ward yourself in properly.

Let's not talk about futures, Severus. There's no need to talk about futures. I'm as aware as you are, as much as I don't want to admit the unfortunate, that they shouldn't be allowed to become desensitized. Bad enough that Hermione Granger already had it in her head once that she could control me with a little cleverness and some familiarity.

The actual full moon proper doesn't begin until two o'clock in the morning tonight, but I've never trusted myself after nightfall, and neither should anyone else. My wand isn't on me. I've only got some pyjamas and this device.

[there is a very long delay before he finally responds.]

When Bellatrix was here, I had them hide the house. You'll have to tell me where it is.

If you've got a map on you, I may be able to plot it from here. As I'm sure you've figured by now, they're a personal specialty.

Just remember to clear it after you're done.

Right, fine, I've got the one off the City guide.

It'll be a moment or two. It's getting a bit hard to concentrate on matters at hand, as you can imagine.

Thank you. I couldn't have asked the kids for something like this, and you were always better than me.

He doesn't bother knocking, because he's not about to announce his presence to the young people gathered inside. Instead he slips past their wards (mental note to get on Granger about making those better - he knows she's capable) and into the cellar, cloaked from sight. It's a dark spell, one not exactly endorsed by the Ministry, and one he improved on from some ancient book in Hungarian.

Halfway down the shabby staircase he lets it dissolve and appears, dressed somewhat casually, wearing a Muggle-style black winter coat (he figures it can't hurt now that Lupin knows) and carrying a few books.

"Well, sit in the center of the room, then." His voice is quiet, but it's clear he's just going to do this and get it over with so he can sit here and be disgruntled all night as soon as possible.

He does twitch slightly when Snape enters, turning his head to compensate for the movement of orbitals which animal ears have, something which he isn't equipped with. Seeing it would be a trigger, typically, but the inevitable happens inevitably in either case, and in a few more hours he would no doubt not be able to have a conversation with the other man at all.

Sliding his hands into his pockets and keeping them there, he does as told and steps slowly into the center of the room, turning around and clicking his bare heels together as he eyes Severus with a pale-faced smile.

"Nice night for it. Not going to say hello, Severus?"

"Hello."

He knows that the other man isn't going to be congenial tonight. In fact, he knows this is probably going to be exceptionally unpleasant, until he actually turns, after which he can just ignore the animal in the room and read quietly. Severus knows better to start anything, now.

He sets his books down on the stairs and turns to face the door, wand out, speaking soft incantations and warding the room sealed. With any luck, the students in the house wouldn't even notice. He could have sealed it from the outside, and left - but it wouldn't be failsafe, then. And if anything happened to him in the night and Severus didn't show up soon enough in the morning, he'd never hear the damn end of it.

Once finished, he turns back around, and sits there on the staircase, across from Lupin, blank.

"Glad to know that you still remember how to say that word," he says, although the way his face pinches shows well enough that he immediately regrets the sharp-tongued response. He's confused, and on-edge slightly, aware that Severus is older than him and has had experiences recently that Lupin can never know and Severus will likely never tell him, save in the event of his taking advantage of another curse. He watches the other man work with quiet blue eyes as he turns to just...sit.

"You didn't have to stay. It would have been alright if you just cast from outside the room. Or is it because Lily is up there? And Lovegood, what's your opinion on Lovegood's girl?"

Severus had made his opinion on Harry and his two friends plainly obvious. It did make sense to him. Three attention-mongering Gryffindors terminally unable to follow all the necessary rules.

He holds one of his books between his hands. He's a little nervous, and it's less threatening than fidgeting with his wand.

"Miss Lovegood is a very smart girl, whom I find wholly unoffensive. Mostly."

She has some poor choices in friends. But aside from those poor choices, she has no friends. Severus wonders if Lupin finds that interesting.

"She assisted me the other day, with Miss Bennet."

He stands for a moment, feeling...uncomfortable, in the basement, surrounded by nothing but dirt walls and a dirt floor and candles. As much as he likes all the dirt-- magically speaking, it's ideal to keep out the influence of the moon for as long as possible. Though there are some moments when he wishes he could just get it over with.

This is one of them. Although Snape isn't looking his way, he still feels naked and on display. He wishes he at least had some socks on, as if that would help. Clearing his throat, he speaks again, slowly settling to the floor to sit cross-legged on cold earth.

"She's interesting. She was in my class when I taught, obviously. The other students seem to avoid her, like they might catch something. You seem unusually...not fond, but tolerant of her. Are you fond?"
