Winter Olympics > Summer Olympics

I wonder, if there's a word for "sohvaperuna" in English. Couch potato? That does sound vaguely familiar so maybe it's the correct term. Anyway, I spent basically the whole day watching television. I didn't mean to, but when I was heading to sauna in the afternoon the Olympic ending ceremony was on telly and I'm glad that I watched it because it ( Read more... )

Summer Olympics > Winter Olympics :P

Partly because I grew up in a family that always watched the Summer Olympics...watching women's gymnastics was almost like being back with my family in high school again. And yeah, also probably because America is more of a Summer Olympics country...past American legends in gymnastics, swimming and track & field are household names, but I can't think of a single famous American Winter Olympic champion.

I don't recall ever watching women's gymnastics with my family. I think that Finland is more of a Winter Olympics country. According to Wikipedia Finland's gotten about twice as many medals in Winter Olympics compared to Summer Olympics in recent years (we got four medals in China this year...).

Of the top of my head out of the Winter Olympic sports I'd say that Finland's good in skiing - both cross-country and Alpine skiing - sky jumping (our national hero/antihero Matti Nykänen won a lot of medals in that), figure skating, ice hockey, snowboarding and curling.

Matti Nykänen is the best ever ski jumper in the world. The man is a legend and has only become more famous after he quit sports in the nineties. He's been a singer, a stripper and he's even been in jail for aggravated assault and domestic violence. There's even a recent movie about him, but I haven't seen that.
