I'm straight edge, kinda

Mar 17, 2008 01:02

Since I seem to be getting nothing useful done today I might as well update. I haven't made a proper update in four days, but before I get to that I'll write up a couple of things that I've come across.

First of all on Friday I came across the term straight-edge, which is a lifestyle that I lead, just not the punk music part of it. :p I found it to be rather interesting. I hadn't thought that there'd be a group like this who were abstinent from alcohol, smoking, drugs and in some cases also casual sex, coffee and meat. The fact that it's linked with punk music is even weirder. I could understand it, if it was linked with Christian rock or something.

But what makes this whole straight edge thing cool in my eyes is that they use the symbol "X" as painted on the back of their hand or tattood somewhere to signify that they're part of the straight edge movement. Now if this thing wasn't linked so heavily with punk music, that I have nothing against but that's not really my main thing either, then I'd totally draw an "X" on my hand the next time that I went to a bar. The thought that there are people out there who don't use alcohol or drugs (and aren't religious fanatics) and who are proud enough of their lifestyle to mark themselves like that, the thought is uplifting.

I guess that I'm so used to being quiet of my choice, since bringing attention to it has brought about negative remarks in the past, on several occasions. I still fail so see how it should concern other people what I choose to pour down my throat, since I certainly don't gripe about other people's choices. So unless I'm asked about it, I don't really mention it. People can just assume that the reason that I'm not drinking is because I'm driving or just don't feel like it that night. People who know me know that it's been like that for all of my life. :p I browsed through some straight edge communities here on LJ and someone wrote that when asked about drinking alcohol, they answered: "I'm allergic to alcohol." XD Maybe I'll try that next time. It would certainly make for an interesting conversation, don't you think.Hmm, Now for the more mundane update part. I'll make this short.

Wednesday:
- I sat in on our student organization's meeting, but didn't contribute. Some interesting things were discussed.
- studied kanjis late into the night and thus only got three hours of sleep

Thursday:
- had my kanji exam in the morning. I really hope that I passed.
- the rest of the day I was pretty lazy and didn't get much studying done. I was just so beat after the exams of the week
- got some books from the Uni libraries for a group project
- there was only one other person besides me at Go club. I played a game with her. It was proved that even if it looks like I'm dominating the game in the early stages, I can still loose the game after that. I don't know, if my problem is in the beginning, middle or the end of the game.
- I went to bed before midnight because I was just so damn tired. That's worth mentioning.

Friday:
- I went to h_a_k_u's after my classes and we worked on the music project. It was fun
- got some more books from the Uni libraries for a group project
- met with MM to go and see Mary's new orchestra's concert, which was nice.
- Mary tried to get me to apply to where she's studying music. Apparently they thing that I could get in, and I probably could, but I'm not really interested. I don't want to become a professional musician like that and I don't want to go to music theory lessons again. The latter is probably the reason behind my reluctance. xp But there are some good sides as well. I'd get free lessons (and food) and could play stuff that was closer to my level and not below it, like it's now at orchestra.

Saturday:
- was jiji_vaan's party where people from our student organization had come. I may have gotten recruited into a roleplaying campaign next Summer. >.> There was good food there and lively conversation, of which I mainly just listened to. Just too many people.
- It was nice seeing shougun_s, even if it was just through Jiji's photos from Japan
- I got home before 3AM

Sunday:
- very lazy day
- umm, I went to sauna.
- been reading a fanfic and listening to good music
- I should be doing my Japanese homeworkI've been really excited by this group project for one of my classes. It's really inspiring and I can't really remember being this exited over something studying related in a long time, or ever before. Could I have finally found my thing? I'm going to be here for the next couple of hours, if I get started writing about it, so maybe some other time.

Easter holidays start next week. ^^
