You know, most of the time when you re-watch an old television show you enjoyed as a child there is a maddening combination of nostalgia and horror: The shows are almost NEVER as good as you remember them, sometimes leading you to ask why you loved that show in the first place. But occasionally, you re-discover a show that actually was fantastic--that was better than it had any right to be..
What am I talking about?
I don't know...
SPLOOSH! (Gets hit in the head with green slime!)
You Can't Do That on Television!
http://www.ycdtotv.com/index.html Now this was great show! The actors are all kids--so their quality of performance is all over the board--(and they have those pesky and charming CANADIAN accents) but the writing is great, the jokes are funny (even after 25 years), it's re-occurring gags were actually worth revisiting and it is still smarter than almost anything that is on TV for kids today. For those of us that grew up with Nickelodeon as it was evolving as a children's network, we remember "Pinwheel" was on all day for the younger kids, then in the afternoons, after school, we got "YCDTOT". The adults and the kids are on equal footing in this world .. but the kids are never talked down to. And Christine McGlade, "Moose" to those of us that watched the show, was a great crush to have -- intelligent, funny, pretty in a non-Barbie Doll, girl-next-door kind of way.
And
taokodr, tell me that Lisa on the show (Lisa Ruddy) doesn't remind you of a certain female friend of ours (with the initials SH)... I wonder if she has a children's television background she is not telling us about...
Oh Canada! Bless you all for Sarah MacLachlan, William Shatner and YCDTOT!
(Oh, and Alanis Morissette, who used to be on YCDTOT as a child!)
