Exactly a year ago today was the day I took a jet back to the States from the UK. The trip was one month long, and it is amazing to me how much can seem to happen in one month. Often in life, weeks and months pass and we look back and wonder why half a year ago seems like yesterday. Sometimes even a month or less can be very significant and involved. The month I spent in the UK, one year ago, seemed like much longer than a month to me. I guess even a day, depending on the occurrences of that day, can make all the difference.
Sometimes time does not tarnish memories. There are some things that can stay very vivid long after their occurrence. Occasionally a few weeks can have a significant effect on many months and years after.
One of the only things I remember from the film ‘Magnolia’ was a narrated phrase that said something like “you may be through with the past, but the past is not always through with you.” I have found this interesting and often true. It seems that this sometimes pertains to sin. Sometimes even when one has turned from a sin and long been forgiven, consequences and after effects of one’s sin can still come back around and create new suffering for anyone effected.
But, sometimes it’s pretty cool when little things from the past pop up unexpectedly and play a new role in one’s life. There have been times in my life when a friend or acquaintance from the past, whom I have not seen in years and whom I never thought I would see again, come back into my life. I saw my friend Erin again last Sunday for the first time in almost a year. She was a good friend of mine when I was in the UK last summer, and I didn’t really think I would see her again. So that’s pretty cool. I guess you never know what the future or the past will bring.
