They were sitting in Ryan’s hotel room just drinking some beer that was in the fridge. They finished taping the show for the week and both had the weekend to relax. Ryan finished his beer and leant over the table to fetch another, his breath ghosting over Colin’s lips and cheeks his own lips inches away from his. They froze for a second and Ryan grabbed another beer and backed off. The silence was thickening the air, Colin finished his beer and bade goodbye to Ryan who didn’t react and left for his own room down the corridor.
Ryan stared into space for the next hour leaving his beer to go warm. He thought about everything and everyone yet at the same time nothing and no one. The pain in his lower back reminded him that he need to move soon if he wanted to walk tomorrow. He got up and went to lock the hotel room’s door as he slid the bolt across he saw it. A simple no addressed envelope with his name on, scrawled by a familiar hand. “Colin” his mind traitorously provided. He slipped his thumb under the flap to open it. Scrawled again was the words “I would have kissed you if it wasn’t for them.” Ryan knew who them was. It was their wives and children. Ryan crumpled the note and went to bed.
Colin woke up late the next morning, the product of spending the night tossing and turning. He got dressed and glared at the bright shirts. “Sometimes I give myself a headache” Colin chuckled. He was just about to leave when he saw the envelope the same one he left under Ryan’s door. He picked it up and lifted up the already ripped flap. He slid out the note and read “I would have kissed you back, I say screw them.” Colin opened the envelope once more to find Ryan’s wedding ring was in there he put the lot on the kitchen counter and made his way out of the room before he reached the door he pulled off his own ring and threw towards the kitchen where it bounced and landed next to Ryan’s. He left smiling.
