End of FurFright

Dec 04, 2013 08:13

Wow, it's been a long time since I posted here.  I used to like it but then everyone moved to FA and Facebook and where ever so there's not much going on here anymore.

Thought I would write my thoughts about the end of FurFright and the launch of a replacement con.

This was my favorite con and I will miss it.

Why is there no clear reason being given for ending the con so abruptly and dramatically? Here's what the web site says:
"The Con Chairs have experienced a devastating turn of events in their personal/family life, making it impossible for the convention to continue. All our time, energy, and resources need to be spent healing and coping with the challenges we face. So due to circumstances beyond our control, FurFright has come to an end. 2013 was our final year."
Now, I want to respect Belic and Kigra's privacy because they are great people and have given a lot to the community. Running a con must be an overwhelming task and wanting a break is natural. Additionally my heart goes out to them facing whatever personal tragedy they are dealing with.  I wish them only the best in coping with whatever challanges they face.

Here's the problem with the vague reason given, they are cancelling one of the largest and most well known cons in the fandom and this is probably the biggest thing to happen in the furry community this year.   Taking such dramatic action and not providing a more detailed reason means that everyone will come up with their own ideas and those will probably be worse than the actual reasons.  Whatever it is, it's likely to eventually get out anyway cause the fandom is a bunch of gossips.

Second, why does FurFright need to end?  Why is it "impossible for the convention to continue"? Why can't or won't Belic and Kigra pass the name and in fact the entire organization on to the people continuing it?  Why is it "due to circumstances beyond our control"? See, this is just gonna fuel all kinda of rumors.  Furries are like old hens circulating rumors at the back fence.

I read in the Flayrah article that they are discontinuing the con because they didn't want it to be changed to something different from their vision.  They want it remembered fondly.  I  can understand that feeling.  Here's the problem with that.  If Belic and Kigra just quietly stepped down then it would have continued, probably unchanged.  Ending it this way means that people's memories of FurFright will always include the dramatic and mysterious way it ended.  Just like the recent anniversary of JFK being shot, this is gonna have all kinds of conspiracy theories dogging it work a long time.  Probably without reason.

Those are my thoughts.

Support the new con and we'll have fun next Halloween.
