So the competetive Ididarod run race is set to start on Sunday and for this years installment the rules have been changed due to the current covid crisis and the fear to spread the disease to small cities in the rural sections of Alaska.

Here is what I think of this mentality:

From the CDC website about the disease diptheria -- "Diphtheria bacteria spread from person to person, usually through respiratory droplets, like from coughing or sneezing"
----------------
. Now what if the villages along the route back from Nome itself had the mentallity that by bringing the sled teams through their village would put their citizenry at risk of bringing the bacterial infection back from Nome?

I should think that the towns would have had to risk some form of exposure by hosting the mushers on their return trip from Nome as I doubt much if any of the valuable medicine was brought along back on the return trip.

I would have to think that the cities chose to accept that calculated infection risk from hosting the returning mushing teams as it was worth it to save the people of Nome.
-----------------
So why now is the viewpoint so different?  Its still a resperatory infection and passable via droplets,
Now granted this run was made to stop a BACTERIAL infection wheras covid is a viral one but even still I do not understand the mentality of this decision.

Biggest difference I see -- 1925 run -- spirit of community and help for fellow man
                                           covid-19  --- fear , anxiety , selfish intent
