It is hard to think of Lucius Malfoy as the Minister, isn't it? The world really has gone insane, there's no way around that.
I'm doing my damnedest to keep an open mind. You may find this strange, but I've been thrown in with Narcissa Malfoy a lot lately and have grown to like her quite a bit (purely platonic). She's not at all like I imagined, and, well, in light of her ability to love this fiend and Severus' deep attachment to him, I keep telling myself that there must be more to Lucius' story than what we've seen. Ben thinks I'm losing my mind, and he's probably right, but . . . Lucius had a wife and family during both Voldemort's plays for power. I suppose it's possible that he did what he did to protect them. Though, it is hard to credit. He just seemed to enjoy blood and cruelty too much, but . . . the man always was a consumate actor, even as a boy. Maybe he's fooled us all. For the sake of our world, I hope so.
We need more than a balancing influence right now. I was able to deter the more excitable members of our party from violence on Tuesday night, but I can't say how long that will last. Ben says that many of his Auror friends have quit in protest. Ben's put in his retirement papers himself because he won't work for Malfoy. Merlin alone knows what will happen with such a drastically diminished peace-keeping force. My only hope is that the Council will provide people comfort, that violence won't be the answer.
Don't worry about tonight. Of course you'll want to spend your last night before your Seclusion with Severus and the children. There will be other get togethers. You might want to tell Severus that Narcissa Malfoy is attending ours tonight. I'd love to see the look on his face.
Speaking of Severus, I saw his response to that woman's smear campaign against your Bonding. He isn't actually going to handle Rita himself, is he? The one thing I've learned about Severus over the years is that he always follows through on his promises. I hope you will keep him too occupied to give thought to that ridiculous woman's libelous charges. Rita really should have written Muggle science fiction, she has such a lurid and active imagination.
Ben, Hermione, and I all look forward to your Bonding Day, if for no other reason than to watch you show that Skeeter creature how wrong she is! Hermione says she is bringing Viktor. This is really going to be a most, er, interesting event, isn't it? Poor Gil is braced for Armageddon. I can't imagine what that Skeeter article has done to him.
Harry, your dad and mom would be more than proud of you. I'm not sure that James would have understood your choice of lifemate any better than Sirius and I do, but he would have accepted it and supported you fully the same as us. And I know without pause that your mother would have been quite happy for both you and Severus. She always insisted that Sirius and James were wrong about Severus, and I think you have proven her right. At least, for your sake I pray you have. There is no going back from the CO, but I'm sure you know all that, and I'm sure that Severus is worthy of you. He'd better be or . . . well, Severus and I never really fought or duelled the way your dad and Sirius did with him, but if he is not good to you, he will learn why people sometimes fear werewolves in human form. And I know this is going to sound strange, but I really hope that you will be good to him, too. Of all of the Order, Severus sacrificed the most for our cause. I'd really like tosee him find some happiness.
Our best to you both. I assume that you have been inundated with knives, robes, jewelery and other assorted presents. But I'd like you to have this charm. Your mother was very fond of swans. She gave it to me for luck off her charm bracelet after she found out about my nature in 7th year, and even though it's silver, I've carried it ever since. I think you should have it. It's the last keepsake I have of her. I'm also sending along a Waterford crystal decanter to annoy Severus, and because you must be showered with useless baubles! And, in case you are in any doubt, I'm terribly proud of you myself.
