adventures

so when i graduated from college and had decided on grad school and had a summer job lined up, i'll freely admit that i didn't pay too much attention to my friends who complained about how much job hunting sucks.  but oh, karma.

graduation and the impending joblessness does create a rather freakish level of stress.  i'm consumed by thinking about it, convincing myself that if i get a job NOW then life will be perfect.  of course, bridget jones reminds us that as soon as one part of your life starts to go well, another part will inexplicably fall to pieces, but is perfect job and perfect boyfriend really too much to ask? ;) kidding people.

regardless, i've got a few leads on the job front and feel good about them.  i am basically at that unfortunate career juncture where in deciding on a job i will likely be faced with a choice between prestige and salary (it is unlikely that i will get both).  i am still on the fence as to which i would  prefer, but probably beggars can't be choosers and i'll take what i can get.

jamaica was great, by the way.  incredibly relaxing and beautiful.  mostly we slept in, went to the beach, and drank rum.  we did spend a couple of days exploring the non-touristy part of montego bay, which was my first fascinating venture into a developing country.  we did touristy stuff too though.  one day bach and i went horseback riding in the mountains, which was absolutely gorgeous.  they also let us ride on the beach and out into the ocean.  if you've never ridden a swimming horse up to it's neck in water  you are missing out, it is sort of wild.

the trip took a strange detour when we tried to return on friday.  our connecting flight from miami to d.c. was cancelled due to the snowstorms in the northeast (which, mind you, did not affect d.c.), as were ALL flights out of miami, so the soonest they could book us a flight was on MONDAY.  it gets better.  we then found out that in addition to being stranded in miami for 3 days, for reasons no one was able to explain to us they would not return our luggage.  even though it was there, in the airport, they insisted that we had to leave it there until our flight left on monday.  so, we were stranded in miami for 3 days with literally nothing but the clothes on our backs.

fortunately, virgin trees are everywhere.  i immediately called adri and jack and within minutes we're on a train to hollywood (FL) where jack picks us up and takes us to their house where there is pizza and beer aplenty.  because they just bought this house and are still renovating, they are still living in an apartment, so they basically gave us the apartment for the weekend and stayed in the house.  in exchange, bach and i spent 3 days helping the paint, rewire, do window treatments, and put up sheetrock.  so the next day we all went to target and bought cheap clothes and necessities to get us through the weekend since we were sans suitcases, and that was that.  we spent st. pattys day in a little bar on the boardwalk in hollywood and also spent an evening in the hard rock casino playing the slot machines (the same hotel where anna nicole smith died, for all you celebrity gossip whores out there).  we returned on monday (flying first class, which while nice, does not make up for the fact that i had to spend over $100 in target to make up for the fact that i was without my suitcase for 3 days).  and if you try to point out that, surely, american airlines would at least have payed to put you up in a hotel for the days you were without a flight, i may have to throw things at you.

in any case, now i'm back to the grind and things are good.  tomorrow is bach's birthday and i have managed to organize one hell of a surprise party for him, so hopefully all will go well with that.  i also bought him the brand new u.s. soccer jersey and look forward to hearing him squeal like a little girl when he opens that.  saturday is barrister's ball and i plan on looking gorgeous and drinking heavily because that's apparently how you fit in with lawyers.

perhaps more later.  now i have to get to work.
