Today at work two guys were standing around talking about how great the Jackass and American Pie movies are. I was trying to keep my head down, but someone had to ask me if I'd seen them, which led to me saying no, which led to them asking why, which led to me having to explain why I don't like those movies, which made me a lesser man than them. And it occurred to me at that very moment that I could be chasing my tail with this movie business. Does the average blue collar care about Jean Renoir's influence on Robert Altman's work, or the use of montage editing in Sergei Eisenstein's "Battleship Potemkin," or the difference between Ingrid and Ingmar Bergman, or that "Brazil" is featured in a three disc edition on Criterion that showcases both the director's cut and the abridged American version? Of course not. And this is the mass audience for American filmmaking, because people will pay to see lousy movies, over and over again. Maybe all of this ideology comes from the movies themselves, a feel of joy and whimsy that someday I'll be just as reputable and talented a writer or director as any of the most critically acclaimed are. But without the tits, explosions, and kicks to the nuts, the average person still won't give a damn.
I think I need to stop working in a hellhole. And I need to see Cait. And I need to go back to school.
