Segment: Jesse and the Kiss

Notes: I loved writing this one. Let it be known that this is one of my favorites.

Xander was having a strange Monday, though that typically went without saying. This was, after all, Sunnydale. That alone was enough to make a person question the sanity of getting out of bed. Still, of all the days in all the land, this had to be the strangest. And that included the lunch with his boss and boss' lover. That had been a strange experience. Who knew Graham could get Riley so annoyed and heated up -- in more ways than one -- with just a few words. Xander wondered, briefly, where he could learn that trick.

Spike kept sending him these bizarre looks when they passed one another in the hallway. If Xander didn't know any better he'd think Spike was trying to flirt with him from afar. It was a silly notion, after all. Still, it was like he was leering at Xander. Xander didn't know which was creepier: the idea of Spike leering at him or the idea of Spike flirting with him. Both thoughts sent Xander into a short period of perpetual bliss.

Having a crush on the guy that was suddenly noticing you, and not necessarily in the way you wanted, was kind of difficult. It really messed with your concentration, for one.

"Xander!" Xander blinked up at Buffy, who had been waving her hand in front of his face for the past two minutes. "Sheesh, twilight zone much?"

"Sorry, I was..."

"Having naughty thoughts about Spike Bradshaw?" Buffy asked with a smirk. "Next time, try not to sigh his name out loud like a fairy princess, hmm?"

"Oh, funny." Xander said, sarcastically. "Where's Willow and Jesse?"

"Willow's at the library--" Buffy rolled her eyes. "--And Jesse is walking this way with a very determined look on his face. Huh... It seems familiar somehow."

"Yeah, he looks like that time he asked Cordelia out." Xander agreed. Buffy suddenly grinned at this reminder and began digging in her backpack for her camera. Xander didn't know why she kept that with her all of the time, but he had to admit that she got a lot of funny pictures that way.

"Xander, I need a favor." Jesse immediately said upon reaching their lunch table. A flash indicated that Buffy had taken a 'pre-embarrassment' picture.

"Yeah, sure, anything." This was, after all, Jesse. Xander's best friend and all time Sega Genesis competitor. He was also the boy who comforted Xander when Tony Harris got out of hand or when that guy at Starbucks called him a fag.

"Okay..." Jesse glanced at Buffy, scowled, and grabbed Xander's arm. Dragging Xander away from the table, they stepped around the side of the building where the only person able to see them was Oz, if the boy decided to look out his van's window. "Now, don't freak out, okay?"

"You're starting to sound creepy." Xander informed him.

"Sorry." Jesse mumbled, before merely staring at Xander. Xander raised an eyebrow and gave him a look of confusion. "I'm trying to get up the nerve."

"You're not going to kill me, are you?" Xander was beginning to get a little worried. Jesse was, normally, pretty stable. But everyone had a limit and Xander had heard some pretty freaky stuff on CNN about teenagers going psychotic and murdering their best friends. Though, that could have been the movie he watched a couple of weeks ago. The point was that it could happen.

Or maybe Xander was just being paranoid.

"Here we go." Jesse said in a nervous tone. This, of course, only served to make Xander nervous. The fact that nervousness often led the body stiffening and an inability to run away was probably a good thing, or else Xander would have been halfway across the school campus by the time Jesse began to lean toward him.

Xander had done quite a few things with Jesse in his lifetime. They've slept in the same bed and took a bath together when they were little, among other typical best friend activities. Jesse had been Xander's first crush, though the other boy had never known. So, when Jesse suddenly pushed him against the red brick of the school and kissed him, Xander was feeling like he had been sucked into an alternate dimension.

It wasn't a bad kiss. Jesse's lips were soft and slightly parted. They didn't bump noses, which was something Xander had discovered could ruin a moment if the other participant was the type to expect perfection. The only problem, as far as Xander could tell, was that Jesse appeared to be about to run away. Or throw up.

Xander didn't want to experience Jesse throwing up at that particular moment, so he pulled back and gave Jesse a strange look. "You call that a kiss?"

"Well, I... Hey!" Jesse glared, mouth pulled into a frown.

"Are you going to tell me why you just attempted to kiss me?" Xander asked.

"I... Look, I just wanted to know, you know? Just... Know." Jesse stammered. Xander immediately understood, however. "I'm sor--"

"No, it's okay." Xander interrupted, giving him a lop-sided grin. "But you're not going to figure anything out if you kiss me like you kiss your mother, Jesse." Jesse turned red around his neck and looked away. Fighting down a laugh, Xander grabbed Jesse's arms and pulled him closer. "Let's try this again."

"A-again?"

"You want to know, don't you?" Xander asked, serious. Jesse let out a sigh and nodded. "Well, okay then. Come here."

This time, Xander initiated the kiss. Cupping Jesse's face, Xander pressed his lips against that of his best friend. As he slipped his hand down and around Jesse's shoulders, Xander allowed the tip of his tongue to graze Jesse's lower lip. Jesse let out a sound of surprise, his lips parting enough to Xander slide inside. Jesse's hands, which had come to rest on Xander's hips, tightened their grip on Xander's t-shirt. Xander bit down lightly on Jesse's lower lip, before pulling back with a slight smile.

"Well?" Xander watched as Jesse blinked at him stupidly.

"Umm... I'm going to have to think about." Jesse stated, licking his lip. Xander laughed. "I'll just say this: Whoever gets you as a boyfriend is one lucky bastard."

"Does this mean we have a new member of Gay Sunnydale?" Xander questioned, unable to hold back a smirk as Jesse took a quick step back and nearly fell.

"No. No... I'm..." Jesse cleared his throat. "It was nice. It was more than nice, fantastic even. I don't think, uh, that it's something that I want to do, you know, all the time. Or, like, again."

"Ah, well then." Xander grinned and threw an arm over Jesse's shoulders. "I don't fully understand why you like women, but I'll come to accept your heterosexuality in time."

"Because there are so few of us." Jesse agreed, with a sad sigh.

"Oddly enough, in this town there are very few of your kind." Xander commented with a laugh. "Maybe you'll end up with Cordelia after all."

"Buffy, Willow, and her are the last of the Women Who Like Men Cub. I don't think I could date Buffy or Willow, that's too close to incest for my taste. But, Cordy? Yum." Jesse said.

"If you can compete with Ms. Legs from Chemistry class, that is." Xander replied, eyes wide as he pointed at Cordelia and Fred, who were bent over a book together and looking rather cozy with one another.

"There is no way." Jesse insisted. "This is a statistical impossibility! How could one town be home to so many gay people?"

"Maybe it's something in the water?"
