I have a real post that I've been working on for a while, but it's too much trouble to finish and my feelings keep changing.
My mom gave us an Obama poster that she picked up during the campaign. It looks pretty much like this:
Perhaps you are familiar with it? Anyway, so we were going to get a cheap frame for it and hang it in our apartment because it is a pretty picture and we like having pretty pictures on the wall.
But then I got to thinking about it and, man, that's pretty creepy.
I mean, it's one thing to throw yourself into supporting a candidate in hopes of reclaiming your country in the name of your own values, but it is another thing entirely to have a propaganda portrait of your acting president on your wall. That's some Kim Jong Ill shit right there. I admire and like Obama as a person and he does inspire me and all of that, but I do not revere or worship him, you know? He causes fluttering of patriotism in my black liberal heart to be sure, but I'm no nationalist at heart.
So, how do I get to enjoy my poster and not feel like I'm being hypnotized into being a zombie for the republic? I'm going to hang it up on the back of my bathroom door. Can you picture it? It'll still be creepy as hell to have the president looking at you while you take a shit (or perhaps he's just politly diverting his eyes?), but come on, that's hilarious. And no one will mistake it for a shrine. Win-win!
Edited to add: Where was I yesterday during the inauguration? Outside playing in the snow, thanks. I did read his speech after the fact though.
