I also feel honored to have gotten to know you. You've been extremely kind and wonderful both with writing and with my school nervousness. If I ever get the chance to meet you, I'd very much like to. Mostly so I can hug you properly for all the help you've given me. It's also been extremely inspiring to see that you do everything you do and still participate in fandom because I've been forever afraid that would be the thing I'd have to lose because of school.
I'm starting the school year carless at the moment. My mother, trying to be helpful and wonderful and kind like she is, took my car to the car wash and while there, the driver's side mirror fell off. Since it has mechanical adjustment feature, it was still being held on with the wires but it just hangs there unhelpful for driving. We tried duck taping it, but the tape didn't quite stick in the heat. I'm supposed to be getting a new mirror for it tomorrow sometime, but it might not be before my first class of the day. The car wash we took it to first said they'd fix it and then when one of the car wash workers said it was loose before we entered, they said they wouldn't. We told them, they should have told us it was loose and we wouldn't have gone through. We've now told everyone how awful they were and not to go there. Several of my mother's co-workers have had similar bad experiences so it's not just us.
Now, on my budget I'd be all for the free car even if it wasn't to my taste, but being carless is not fun. After I crashed my first car (I swerved to miss a dog and hit a bus) being only able to go to school on my own (as we lived (and still live) a block and a half from the high school) sucked. I've also learned however not to buy too quickly and risk getting the wrong thing or something you'll come to regret having.
Well, that was quite a bit of a ramble. I blame it on the fact that I'm avoiding some history note copying down and printer fiddling. :D
This fandom, and everyone, has been so welcoming and friendly to me, that it'd be hard to be anything else in return! I think I've been extremely lucky to have made lovely friends--like you--who put up with me writing All The Things and occasionally babbling about my life and my cat and my husband. *hugs you* Let me know if you're ever in Southern California...we've got a spare bed and an Evil Demon Cat!
About participating...I think it's just a matter of priorities. Sometimes your priorities shift and change; but if something's important to you, you find a way to keep it in your life. (I assume, once school starts properly at the end of September, I'll be a bit less active in fandom than I've been this summer, but I'll still be around!)
Oh, gosh, evil car wash people! Hopefully your new mirror arrives promptly. And at least you've told everyone how awful the experience was, so perhaps that'll have an actual impact. Fingers crossed.
I think, assuming I can survive the next couple of weeks being carless, we're going for free-but-ugly car. It's newer, at least, and in good shape, and so I can drive it for a while, while we take our time and do proper research about what we want, and then trade it in. It's definitely one of those classic delayed-reward scenarios, though, where I KNOW the outcome is better if we wait, but the waiting is so frustrating...
Good luck with the history notes! I am also taking notes. On household possessions in the 14th century and the economy of surplus and desire. Fun fun.
I love that you write All The Things. I try to do that, but I'm slower about it because I have less focus, at least lately. Last night alone I worked on 3 separate fics within 2 hours. I don't know if I'll be in Southern California (I am not good at geography) but I will be in California probably next summer sometime to visit family. Primarily in San Francisco but maybe other places, too. Most of my mom's side of the family live all over California.
I have a lot of plans that go with doing well in school, so school and homework will be the main priority but I've been a writer since I was 12. I can't imagine not taking breaks from homework to do some writing.
It used to be a really nice place, but when we were there it was way different and looked rather run down. We think it changed management or something to have become so bad compared to before. It used to have a cute little shop inside and adjoining restaurant and both of those are gone.
Waiting is frustrating but I wish I had waited just a bit longer instead of buying my car. It's a Pontiac and about 3 months after I bought it (used, not new) it was announced that they weren't going to make them anymore. I've had lots of problems with it. It works for now, but if I can ever trade it in for something better I definitely will.
The nice thing is the teacher puts the notes online, so anything I may have missed or want to elaborate on that I didn't get to in class, I can. Plus, we're allowed to print them out. He even suggests it. My printer is just being evil and won't print anything at all, but at least I can copy the notes down until I get that sorted out.
Three fics, you say... *wants* I need the Fun Things to read, at the moment. I am carless and ill. /whining.
We're definitely in SoCal, and SF is pretty far, but...who knows? It'd be fun to meet you in person. :-)
I think of fanfic as my relaxation, definitely. It's a different kind of writing. Different parts of my brain. (Sometimes more fun, but they don't pay me to do this all day...)
Oh, Pontiac, yeah. Not a good time to buy one of those. :-/ I think Awesome husband wants a Mazda 3. I'm not opposed, I guess. More fun than anything we've got right now!
I do that, with the online notes, the morning before lecture--not too far in advance, otherwise no one'll show up, but it only makes sense. If I'm going to use notes to talk from anyway, why not make them available for students? And if someone has to miss class, then they're not going to miss everything. :-)
New fic up now. Definitely a reflection of my current pathetic state. :-p
By the way, have you been watching the Pond Life episodes? I'm just going to miss Amy and Rory even more, after this season...
Both of your fics and part 2 of DYtS. I think I'm almost done with one of yours, but this week has been a bit insane with all my homework and such. Luckily I have time this weekend since I only have one class on Thurs, no classes on Fri and of course none of Sat and Sun. I also don't have classes Mon because of the holiday. I do have some homework to do but I'm hoping to get most of it done Thurs night and Fri morning so I have the weekend for me.
I know my mother has family she'd like to try to see in SoCal so maybe... I did mention briefly that I'd like to maybe stop and see a friend. But the trip is still a summer away.
It definitely is relaxation. I have discovered that it is easier on me to type up my notes in class instead of after class, both to save my hand from cramping and to give me more time for homework and writing afterwards. And I'm glad I discovered this on day 3 instead of day 23.
All my friends had Pontiacs and never once complained until I bought one and suddenly all I heard was "Oh, they're crap, cos this breaks and this and that." and I was just like "Why'd you never say anything before? D:"
Most of my teachers have roughly the schedule of what we'll be covering per class online, but official notes and things don't appear until day of. I only have 5 classes and it is only day 3 of classes, so I'm still getting into the swing of things, but I think I'll be okay.
Will have to go and read it asap. Still have a couple of school things I'd like to attempt first.
Yes, I have, ever morning before school. I even tried to fit "Ood on the loo" into a conversation today and no one understood. I'm going to miss them but I am also very excited for the new companion. And not just because she's close to my height and would be easier for me to dress up as for Halloween.
