prometheus!

(Actually, just as a side note, because I'm realizing this: if I'm going to put up more of the original fantasy fic, I could use more medieval/fantasy/fairytale icons...suggestions, people?)

So, I was feeling well enough to venture out for a couple of hours, and Awesome Husband and I went to see Prometheus. Random observations under the cut; not in ( Read more... )

Really? But he doesn't seem to like them much! Elizabeth, maybe. He was watching her dreams. Which is kind of creepy, but also a bit sweet.

But I could totally see him using sex to manipulate them, yes. And you know he'd be fantastic in bed...or anywhere, really!

Plus there's his connection with Vickers - there's some obvious tension there, for good reason ...I thought of that one! But I was trying to figure out what they'd get out of it--as androids, they don't have the emotional ties, post-sex, that people do, right? (Or would they be attempting that...?)

Ooh. I could kind of see David/Bishop. They could have very cerebral debates about the role of an android and the relationships that are possible, or desirable, to have with humans. And by debates I mean naked debates in bed, of course.

And being able to find it amusing is an emotion, too. As, really, is the choice. (I loved his matter-of-fact explanation for why he's wearing the suit for protection, because that just makes the entire fact of it more uncanny.) We're told that it's emotional mimicry, but there're other things there, too, above and beyond that. David is capable of learning and growing; if he emulates emotion frequently enough...

Android sex...probably some combination of both? They're designed to be able to feel sensation, of course, and to receive stimuli; but they have capacities for absorbing data far beyond ours. And now I am thinking about this WAY too much! :-p

I have the feeling that David's initial impression of him would be '...is this model defective?' Ahahaha yes. But then David would be curious, and try to figure out the WHY, and of course Bishop would try to talk to him in return. And then they'd end up in bed. 'cause that's how things ought to end, clearly.

I'd probably need to watch Aliens again, too, if I were going to...if I end up...writing it. (Curse you and your puppy-dog eyes! but not really...)

I always thought that Bishop had emotions, too. They're not quite the same ones a human would have, in a given situation, but they're equally valid. David, being an earlier model, might not think he has that capacity, but I'm guessing he'd be proved wrong in the course of said fic.

They definitely have an essence of self. They'd actually fit neatly into a Platonic universe, I think; though I'm thinking more about the Stoic philosophers and the pursuit of appropriate, regulated emotion for any given situation. That sounds exactly like what an android is. So, ought they not to be considered sentient--certainly they're philosophers, lovers of wisdom, in the truest sense, right?

In fact, there are bunnies that are less cute than Bishop's earnest or sadface. *laughs* I really need to watch that one again. But yes--Ash seems to take some pride in the fitting-in; Bishop, on the other hand, is unashamed of what he is, and yet genuinely wants to be liked, AS what he is. David would probably admire Ash's manipulative/mimicking abilities, and be very confused by Bishop--and then curious! ("What possibilities is he seeing that I am not?")

Hope they were pleasant dreams! filled with pleasing androids, and no scary aliens!
