Last night I sat down to change the times on my VCRs. When I got to my trusty Magnavox that I got in 1989, I noticed the date was wonky: 03 12 88. So I fixed it to say 03 11 08, but the 8 button didn't seem to be working. I got nothing when I pushed it again and again and from a zillion different angles. Finally, I was like huh, let me try the 7 button. That worked. How about the 9? No luck.
So it looks like the VCR, which successfully (and surprisingly to me) made it through the Y2K turnover, finally was thwarted. Whoever designed the VCR set it up so the date would not go beyond Dec. 31, 2007. Because who would have thought that it would still be chugging along just fine after 19 years.
I ended up setting the date as 3/11/07 and will have to remember to redo the date each New Year's day until the VCR gives up the ghost in oh probably 20 years or so.
