[This has not been Garviel's day.  Really it just hasn't.  He's been stabbed through his primary heart, had some jerkass steal his identity, and then left with the check of an eat and run.  He stands up, settles his bill, and stumbles out of the diner, still bleeding from a jagged hole in his back, which is quickly scabbing over into a blood-seal.]

[he stops. Stares at Merem for a moment, then says, a trifle coldly.]

"I endure. So what brings you out here?"

[oh god his blood tastes weird to a vampire. The blood clots almost instantly, and has all kinds of weird hormones and other trace chemicals that aren't in normal human blood.]

[oh yes, and if he's able to perceive the DNA, it's weird too. A bunch of crafted engineered stuff overlaid and intermixed with human genetics. He pauses, wiping pink spittle from his lips, and straightens, so that he is actively resisting the weakness of the grindingly painful wound, and the loss of blood.]

"There are certain compromises and alliances an Astartes cannot make. I let you live because you're not an apparent threat, and I've only seen you on neutral ground. But I will not be disloyal to my code and accept aid and succor from something which may be a foe of humanity."

I'm most certainly a foe of humanity but I also work for humanity also. I wonder where that places me in the lineup?

[he doesn't mention he's killed several eldar, including one Exarch in an epic hand to hand duel that ended with him strangling his foe with a twist of wire, the only weapon either of them had with any remaining functionality.]
