Personality:  Waka tends to be self-assured to the point of arrogance - referring to himself as "the gods' gift to man" doesn't exactly suggest humility. At times, in fact, he seems to be so confident in his abilities that he takes blatant risks and alienates those who could help him simply out of a disregard for what anyone else will do, since naturally he can handle whatever might be thrown at him. He doesn't seem to care what others think of him - even when people throw false accusations at him, he rarely makes any effort to deny them and at times seems to encourage confusion as to his motives, although he seems to do this more out of amusement than any particular malicious intent. His guilt over the demons that were supposed to be in his charge plaguing the world, and his righteous resolve to destroy them, are rarely evident; despite having such a tragic background Waka is generally upbeat and enjoys good-natured taunting and being determinedly mysterious. He has a habit of conveniently ignoring or leading conversations away from questions he doesn't feel like answering, although often this misdirection is so subtle that people don't realize he hasn't answered them until later.

Abilities/Strengths:  Waka's most prominent ability is his gift of prophesy. His predictions are never wrong. He is also an Onmyouji, so he has a vast knowledge on demons and magical barriers as well as advanced technology. He can fly and walk on water and wield two blades simultaneously, which makes him a very agile and dangerous swordsman.

Weaknesses:  Ushiwaka can only predict a couple of days into the future at most, and his prophecies have a tendency of being vague and cryptic. He's very arrogant of his own abilities and will often dismiss help even if he needs it.

History:  Not much is known about Waka's history, and there are only vague details regarding his origins. He is a member of the Moon Tribe, an ancient people who bear the responsibility of guiding gods who descend to earth back to the Celestial Plain where they belong when the time has come for them to return. Over two hundred years ago, the Moon Tribe built a massive ship, known as the Ark of Yamato, in which to contain evil beings such as demons, and imprisoned a massive number of them within it(for what purpose, exactly, no one ever satisfactorily explains - generally it's thought to have been meant as a prison). The ark, piloted by Waka, was taken to the Celestial Plain - but one of the strongest demons, the eight-headed dragon Orochi, somehow managed to break free and razed the Celestial Plain. Amaterasu, the wolf goddess of the sun, fought against him alongside Waka, who naturally felt responsible for the destruction Orochi had wrought. However, Orochi and Amaterasu wound up plummeting from the Celestial Plain to earth, locked in mortal combat.

During Orochi's attack upon the Celestial Plain, the Celestials who lived there - thoroughly unaware of the Ark's true purpose - fled in fear, to the only means of escape that seemed viable...the Ark of Yamato. Waka, discovering this, rushed to the ark to stop them, only just making it on board before the ark departed from the ruined Celestial Plain, but arrived too late; the demons had already overrun the Celestials, killing every last one of them. Faced with impossible odds and feeling as though disposing of the demons was the only way he could make up for what he viewed as his successive failures to contain them, Waka deliberately crashed the ark in hopes of destroying the demons, very nearly dying himself in the process. Unfortunately, his plan backfired; the ark crashed into a lake on earth, but rather than killing the demons, this just opened a hole in the ark through which they escaped to plague humanity. Feeling even more responsible, Waka resolved to purge these monstrosities from the world, becoming a renowned tao master in Japan and exorcising countless demons.

Waka, reuniting with Amaterasu on earth, made a prophecy for her after she was unable to defeat Orochi by herself - in one hundred years, he told her, the Chosen One would appear who could destroy Orochi, provided Amaterasu waited for him and aided him when the time came. Amaterasu, trusting Waka, faithfully waited for a hundred years in Kamiki Village - despite being reviled by the villagers, who believed the wolf to be an agent of Orochi's, scouting out the villagers for the best annual sacrifice - for the appearance of the Chosen One. Exactly one hundred years after Waka's prophecy, a man named Nagi, to prevent the woman he loved from being sacrificed to Orochi, stood up to the great dragon. Between Amaterasu and Nagi, Orochi was destroyed...but in protecting Nagi during the battle, Amaterasu was mortally wounded. The villagers erected a memorial to the wolf and still hold a festival every year in honor of the great victory over Orochi.

Waka has been, more recently, following around the reincarnation of Amaterasu - just recently she was resurrected into the memorial statue the village of Kamiki erected of her to combat another surge of evil power thoughout the world. Amaterasu's faith in Waka in waiting for the Chosen One all those years, despite his being of the Moon Tribe who caused everything that had happened, meant a great deal to Waka, and as such he continues to help Amaterasu even though the process of her reincarnation wiped out her memories of him and their former friendship.  The two finally make it to the Ark of Yamato where Waka confesses to Amaterasu his past again and where he takes a blow for Amaterasu from Yami. It sens him flying over the edge to the Abyss below.
