Tags Amy couldn’t help but shift uncomfortably as she sat across from Batista, the three seated in a plush booth at the Sky Room nightclub in Times Square to enjoy happy hour. After dropping off his Bugatti at Fortune Inc., they’d taken one of the company cars so Jay wouldn’t have to worry about diving later. The actual meeting had gone incredibly well, so well that Batista insisted that they have champagne to celebrate. At first, Amy had been wary about the prospect, the redhead practically tugging on the sleeve of Jay’s impeccable Versace suit. She hadn’t entirely meant to do that, but it did save her from sitting next to Batista; Amy still managed to keep a respectable distance between herself and her boss. However, every time she shifted, she ended up moving closer to Jay. Certainly, the blue eyed male was still overbearing and cocky at times but Amy would rather deal with him any day of the week. And maybe it was meant to be a comforting gesture, the redhead wasn’t quite sure, but beneath the table Jay reached for her hand. She wasn’t comforted, per say, but she did appreciate the gesture nonetheless.
“I’d like to propose a toast,” Batista spoke and indicated for their server to pour the champagne. “To new business partners,” he said, his eyes never leaving Amy’s form.
“I think that we should also include Mr. Del Rio,” Amy suggested with forced calm. “Don’t you think, Mr. Cage?”
Jay nodded sharply, removing his iPad from his briefcase and placing the object on the table. “I think Mr. Del Rio would appreciate that… and be pleased to hear that his associates are welcoming the partnership with Fortune Inc.” Releasing Amy’s hand briefly, he added, “Ms. Dumas if you could contact Mr. Helmsley? I’m certain that he would also like to be present.”
Amy nodded and removed her company issued iPhone, quickly contacting Hunter to let him know that his presence had been requested. And while she did that, Jay connected to Skype.
“Ms. Dumas…” Batista sat back, one arm across the back of the plush seat. “Do you enjoy working for Fortune Inc.?”
“I have no complaints,” Amy replied smoothly. “Though I fail to see how this is relevant to the business at hand.”
Batista grinned, “If you were the slightest bit unhappy, I was prepared to offer you a contract to work for me as my personal assistant.. I doubt my business partner would object, either.”
Amy smiled, making short work of a shot glass of vodka to avoid saying anything that could potentially jeopardize the deal. Glancing sideways, she could see the almost imperceptible clenching of Jay’s jaw, knowing without having to ask that the blue eyed male was equally irritated as she was.
“I’ll contact Mr. Del Rio and let him know that he should expect a conference call soon,” Amy spoke to Jay as he was unable to reach his contact. “And in the meantime, we can wait for Mr. Helmsley.”
Jay slid out from the booth in one swift movement, offering his hand to assist Amy. She accepted without hesitation and didn’t flinch when that same hand moved to the small of her back. They waited, however, until they were in the elevator before starting a conversation.
“I did try to warn you, Ms. Dumas.”
“I know… and I appreciate that.” Amy straightened the sleeves of her suit jacket, beyond thankful that she hadn’t changed from her work attire. “As unprofessional as this will sound, I hope we can keep contact to a minimum with Mr. Batista.”
Jay smirked, leaning back against the armrest in the elevator, one hand tucked in the front pocket of his dress slacks. “That can be arranged.”
Amy let out a near inaudible sigh of relief, choosing her words carefully before she spoke, “Good. I’m not saying that I’m incapable of doing business with Mr. Batista… I would just prefer not to.”
“If Mr. Helmsley has not already advised Ms. Young, you might want to warn her of Mr. Batista’s behavior prior to their arrival.”
“Already done,” Amy replied, holding up her iPhone.
Not much else was said as they soon reached the lobby, the pair heading outside to wait for Hunter and Renee..
“Why’d you and your little boyfriend break up?”
“It’s none of your business, Jay.”
Jay arched an eyebrow at her, “but isn’t it? I’m your boss and your field partner. I should be the first to know if this is going to cause any issues or be a source of distraction.” He shrugged slightly, “for all we know, that could be why Shane had him reassigned.”
Amy rolled her eyes, “oh yes, because I’m sure that Shane really cares about that stuff.”
Jay scoffed at her, “it’s like I told you before, Amy.. he’s the one responsible for getting me out of the area after we completed our HRT training.”
They’d been in the FBI for three years as field agents, as required, the pair opting to team together and granted the opportunity to do so. They’d come up through the Metropolitan Police Department together, were in that line of work for four years after going through college together.. And prior to that, they’d gone through the Cadet Corps while in high school together..
To say they’d been close was vast understatement with their 9 years as field partners and 13 years together.. even if they had put their relationship partially on-hold while going through the academy and HRT training.
“Jay..” Amy began and then sighed, “do you really think this wise for us to be field partners again?”
“Come again?” Jay said first and then smirked. “I wouldn’t ask for anyone else. Agent Helmsley is good, don’t get me wrong.. But he can’t replace you.” His smirk only broadened, “just like there’s no one who could replace me.”
She was spared from having to reply as Hunter and Renee arrived, the four then heading side while Jay dialed Del Rio so he could join in their toast.
