Alex and Amy stewed in silence, the brunette in the front passenger’s seat after a mad scramble to get in after the redhead had tried to leave the parking lot without him. Josh and Jamie, by contrast, were catching up, seemingly as comfortable with one another as they had been five years ago.
Admittedly, Jamie was a little sore that Josh hadn’t kept in touch at all, but she was willing to forgive that for now.
After all, Josh wasn’t the one with a fiancé and a wedding date set for next June, exactly one year from the present date.
“So, do tell Satan Spawn,” Amy slid a look towards the brunette as they drove towards the family resort in Kona. “What have you been up to since you fled for the mainland?”
“I didn’t flee,” Alex replied, a muscle ticking in his jaw, “I told you I was going to college in Michigan, remember?”
Amy smiled tightly, “of course. I also remember getting ready for a going away party and the guest of honor not showing up…. You remember that, don’t you?” And without waiting for him to reply, she continued, “oh wait, you wouldn’t because you weren’t there.”
Josh cleared his throat, “so, Amy, J says that you’re getting your pilot’s license?”
Amy gripped the steering wheel tightly, “yeah… that way we won’t have to rely on our brothers to help out with inter-island transportation. I’ve already taken the written tests, have some flight time and eventually I need to do a cross-country flight.”
Jamie smiled, “I’ve also started a part-time catering business though we’re only doing small luaus for now. Just to supplement the whole tour guide thing.”
“How’d you two get into that anyway?” Alex questioned, “I mean, last I knew, the two of you were so caught up in surfing and beach volleyball.”
“We still do that stuff,” Jamie replied first, “but we started the tour guide stuff because we were pretty much doing that for guests that stayed at the main resort in Oahu. We graduated early from college so we started helping out at the resort.”
“Dad was getting on our cases about how surfing and beach volleyball don’t pay the bills,” Amy clarified, though mostly speaking to Josh. “And the thought of working in an office all day makes me want to gag. We know the islands and that’s all there is to it.”
Alex frowned a little, “so how long have you two been playing tour guide?”
Jamie smiled brightly, “as of today? One day. At least just on our own and away from the resort.”
Alex rolled his eyes, “great. We’re at the mercy of two would-be Marco Polo’s… one of whom is more likely to sacrifice me to a volcano.”
Amy smiled sweetly, “I’d never do that, Alex… can’t risk angering the gods, now can we?” A pause as she guided the rental into the parking lot of the small bed and breakfast, “and besides, it needs to be a virgin sacrifice, not a moron.”
While Jamie showed the guys to their rooms, Amy stayed outside, standing beneath a palm tree while watching the waves breaking on the nearby beach.
