Renee sat across from Hunter, the two heading to Times Square for lunch.

“So why does that Cage guy have the big corner office?”

“Because he oversees the day to day operations of Fortune.”

Renee arched an eyebrow, “wait a minute… Amy’s the personal assistant to the CEO?”

Hunter nodded, “pretty much. He requested a personal assistant instead of a personal secretary.” The blonde man sipped his iced water, “he’s very picky about who works with him.”

Renee frowned, scanning the menu, “so who’s idea was it to assign Amy to him?”

“Deputy Assistant Director Shane,” Hunter replied, “I don’t doubt your abilities either, Ms. Young, I can assure you of that. Mr. McMahon also assured me that you both were highly qualified for either position. This job isn’t going to be easy.” He bridged his hands together, “there are a lot of tight deadlines to meet, meetings to attend, business trips overseas with temperamental clients and suppliers…”

“So why did we need those complicated resumes?”

“So there wouldn’t be any questions around the office. Believe it or not, Fortune is a valid company and they do have some stroke in the medical world. They supply some of the top teaching hospitals in the country.”

A noise of disapproval passed through Renee’s lips, “I can’t believe we haven’t busted them yet.”

The blonde man grimaced, “they’re good at hiding…. This is why you and Ms. Dumas are on the case. We’re taking a risk putting the two of you in harm's way like this but, Deputy Assistant Director McMahon and myself are also confident that you two are perfect for the job.”

Renee tapped her manicured nails on the table, “what about Chris, A.J and Alex? I mean, won’t they be in harm's way as well?”

“Well yes,” Hunter admitted, “and there will be some situations and information that they’ll be privy to with their positions in the company. There’s always a certain amount of danger with these types of assignments.”

Renee nodded, the conversation halting while they ordered, and then when it picked up again; the blonde woman queried after the specifics of her job as personal assistant. Because from what she knew already, personal assistant meant two different things entirely to Hunter and Mr. Cage.

Meanwhile…

Amy ignored the grumbling of her stomach as she sat in the Dennis Miller Associates showroom, a large catalog of fabric swatches, wallpaper samples and furniture styles on her lap. She’d had the feeling that with a company name like Fortune, they’d want only the best, and given the designer suits that Cage wore; the redhead speculated that he wanted the same.

Currently, the tall blue eyed brunette was with a sales associate, discussing office furniture while Amy was tasked with picking out a small living room set for the spacious corner office.

Amy was interrupted from her musings when Jay cleared his throat, “yes, Mr. Cage?”

Jay offered his hand, “We’re to view tables, desks and shelving units for the office.” And when she ignored the gesture, he put his hand on the small of her back. “Please remember that we’ll be doing this tomorrow so I can purchase suitable furnishings for my penthouse.”

Amy forced a smile, “I look forward to it.”

“You should,” a beat passed, the corners of his mouth twisting into a smirk, “because next week business picks up. All of the board meetings start and you will need to be there and ready to take notes.” Then he paused, blue eyes assessing her, “we’ll need to do something about your wardrobe, as well.”

“Excuse me?”

“You look frumpy, I need classy and sophisticated, I’m the CEO, remember? Appearance is everything and your appearance is a direct reflection of me” Jayhalf shrugged, “we’ll handle that on Friday though.”

“Of course,” Amy replied, forcing herself to remain calm and keep her temper in check. “And tomorrow is shopping for personal furniture?”

He smiled, more teeth than lips for her liking. “Tomorrow morning, you can meet me at the penthouse,” leaving no room to argue, he continued, “and we’ll go from there.”

By the time 5:00 rolled around and Amy hadn’t yet returned to the office building, Renee unsure if she should wait or not. The blonde woman waiting in the lobby near the elevator, sending a text to Chris that she would see him later. The clock was showing 5:30 when Amy appeared, approximately eleven hours after she had first gone in.

As quickly as possible, Amy gathered her belongings, gesturing to Renee to leave as soon as possible so they wouldn’t have to deal with Jay. The redhead was silent until they got into the cab, Renee receiving a text from Chris and answering that they would be home soon.

“He’s Satan spawn,” Amy finally said. “Today it was shopping for office furniture, tomorrow I’m supposed to meet that pompous ass at his penthouse and on Friday we’re going clothes shopping for me.”

Renee arched an eyebrow, “he wants you to meet him at his penthouse?”

Amy nodded, “yeah. We’re going to be at the office at some point because he’s having the furniture for the office delivered but for the morning? At his stupid penthouse.” Heaving a sigh, she continued, “I have such a headache right now.”

Renee gave her friend a one-armed hug, “do you want to cancel?”

Amy bit down on her lower lip, “would you mind?”

“No, I can just head over to their apartment with Chris and tell Alex to wait for you. Unless you don’t want to see him?”

“I’d never hear the end of it if I did that…. Not see him, I mean. I don’t have to see him, of course, but I…”

“I know what you mean,” Renee squeezed her friend’s hand, “and I’ll let the guys know what’s going on.”
