Tags When they get home, Jamie heads to her bedroom while Amy first goes to the guest room to grab her laptop; the redhead nearly tripping over the air mattress in her quest. Really she should be sleeping or at least in her room, but right now, the last thing on her mind is sleep.
She takes her laptop into the kitchen, resisting the urge to kick Alex on her way out.
Even if there was no meeting that night, Trish had sent a text requesting that Amy or Jamie do a background check on a potential client. Amy also realizes that she’s taking a risk by doing her research in the house, but she also can’t afford to waste time.
Added to that, she’s run out of her sleeping pills and with her insomnia kicking in, Amy needs something to do.
The opening of a door momentarily breaks her concentration, Amy switching to another tab in the web browser to be on the safe side. She almost lets out a sigh of relief when she realizes that it’s Josh, stumbling sleepily towards the kitchen, yawning widely as he heads towards the sink.
“Glasses are in the cupboard to your left,” Amy reminds the blue eyed male.
“Got it,” Josh manages to reply, eyes barely open as he fills the glass half way with water from the sink. “Still having insomnia issues?”
Amy nods, fingers of her right hand tapping on the table. “I’m finally taking something for it but my refill ran out.”
Between her alternating states of hating Alex and worrying about Alex; Amy forgets that she and Josh used to watch cartoons on Saturday mornings together when they were growing up in the same suburban neighborhood. And she forgets that he is the same boy that never treated her any differently when she wanted to play baseball or football at the park.
While she never would crown him with the term of best friend, and she would never say that Josh knows her as well as Jamie knows her; he does know her.
So when he sits down across from her, Amy picks up where she left off with her investigation.
When he’s done, she’s made some progress, Josh pushing his chair back quietly.
“If you hurt her in any way I will castrate you.”
“If I hurt her in any way, I’ll help.”
Amy smiles, a tiny smile, but one that reaches her eyes as she meets Josh’s sincere expression; his face illuminated by the soft glow of the moon.
“Good night Amy.”
“Good night Josh.”
She notes that Josh doesn’t head to the guest room, heading instead to Jamie’s room. They’ve only just gotten back together and she’s sure that he knows that he has a lot of making up to do, but she doesn’t try to stop him.
Amy’s unsure as to how long she remains at the kitchen table, but when she finally notices that the battery on her laptop is near drained; she decides to stop. Not because she wants to but because she has to.
She’s still awake enough as she heads back to the guest room, finding her way easier to the desk so she can plug her laptop back in.
But this time she does trip, the redhead landing half on Alex and half on the air mattress.
It doesn’t take him long to realize that there’s a body on top of his and when he realizes who it is, that familiar smug look sets in quickly.
“I knew you wouldn’t be able to resist.”
“Don’t flatter yourself, Shelley.”
“C’mon Amy, it’s okay to admit it…. I mean, if I was a chick, I’d do me.”
“You do that then,” Amy commented, “and let me go now or I can promise you that there will be no little Shelley’s running around in the near future because I will personally decommission you.”
He relents his grip, but follows after her when she returns to the kitchen.
“Why can’t you leave me alone?”
“Because, now I’m awake and I won’t be able to fall back asleep.”
“So?” Amy shakes her head, getting the coffee ready for Jamie. “I fail to see how this is my problem.”
“You woke me up, so this is your problem.”
Amy rolls her eyes, ignoring him as best she can while she makes the coffee, leaning against the counter when it’s done; gathering her hair into a messy bun. She’s acutely aware that he’s watching her and confirms those suspicions when she opens her eyes to find him giving her the once over.
But this isn’t quite the same as him undressing her with his eyes, which he’s done countless times before. And admittedly, she’s done the same to him.
And then their gazes lock, and she wonders if he thinks he can read minds now or something.
Sighing slightly, she breaks eye contact, intending to brush past him so she can head to the living room. This casual dismissal doesn’t sit well with him, and she’s well aware of that fact, which is why it doesn’t surprise her too much when he grabs her wrist.
Alex moves away from the wall only to push her up against it, close enough that their foreheads are barely touching and that he can clearly see the green in her hazel eyes.
She doesn’t know who breaks first and she doesn’t think that it really matters, she just knows that their mouths have crashed together in a near violent fashion and that his fingers are digging into her hips. And she feels so alive, her back pressed tightly against the wall lower bodies grinding hard together.
They break apart long enough to draw breath and then his lips are hot and insistent against her neck, her nails are digging into his biceps and one of his hands is skimming the underside of her breast.
The opening of a door in the hallway breaks through their lust and for a moment, Amy wonders if this is just a passing moment or if there’s anything significant.
She doesn’t want to get her hopes up so she doesn’t ask.
They aren’t the types to plan a relationship, anyway.
If it happens, it happens and if it doesn't, it doesn't.
That's all there is to it.
