Tags The drive back to the house was tense to say the least, Alex and Josh unusually quiet, seemingly afraid to even breathe. Regardless, Amy and Jamie remained calm, casually discussing which iPod to use for that night’s playlist at the bar. Since it was still early afternoon, the two women had a good amount of time to plan.
Jamie popped the trunk when they arrived back, “all right,” she handed one stuffed grocery bag, along with the curtain rods to Alex, “all of this goes to the basement.” She handed another two to Josh, “and so do these.”
And when they just stood there, she arched an eyebrow, “did I stutter?”
Amy cleared her throat, picking up two grocery bags, “I’d do what she said or you two will be looking for somewhere else to stay. Capiche?”
The two males scowled, grumbling about bossy women but complied, taking the items down to the basement as requested.
“I’ll put these away,” Jamie offered when all of the groceries were inside, Amy having taken Alex and Josh’s requested items to the guest room already. “If you could supervise The Two Stooges?”
“Sure,” Amy replied, grabbing a home improvement magazine along with the latest IKEA catalog. “I’ll put them to work.”
Meanwhile, Josh and Alex were downstairs, tripping over boxes as they tried to navigate their way through the basement area.
“Oh I’m sorry,” Amy began in a voice that was hardly sincere, “we must have forgotten to turn on the light.” Heading back upstairs, she turned the light on and then returned. “Now, Jamie and I are intending to turn this into a second living room, another guest room and small game room. The basement is already partitioned so we just need to paint, put in carpeting and furniture.”
“So how do we,” Alex gestured between himself and Josh, “figure into all of this?”
“Duh, why do you think J and I agreed to pay for all of your crap and allow you to stay with us rent-free for three weeks?”
Alex groaned, “So you two are basically using us for labor?”
Amy smiled, handing them each a paint brush, “what did you think we were going to use you for?” And then she set a can of primer between them, “have fun.”
Alex glared at her back, “hey, where are you going?”
Amy fanned her face with her hand, “outside so I can use the pool, of course.”
Josh let out a sigh, “maybe we should have slept in the car.”
“You think?” Alex complained, dipping the paint brush into the primer. “If it hadn’t been for your weak ass wanting to see Jamie again.”
“Excuse me? You were the one who was whining about how much you missed Amy.”
“Not in the way you’re implying”
“Oh please, that’s a load of crap, Shelley.”
“Just shut up and paint, Sabin.”
Meanwhile, back outside, Jamie joined Amy in the pool.
“Are they being useful?”
“I don’t know how useful they’ll ever be but they are getting the wall primed.”
Jamie stretched out her legs, lounging on an inflatable mattress, “do you have any requests for dinner?”
Amy shook her head, “not particularly.”
“We could order take-out?”
“For two or for four?”
Jamie pretended to think about it, “For four I guess. Otherwise we’ll never hear the end of it.”
“Have you two ever considered putting fans or something in that room?” Josh wiped off his sweaty forehead with his t-shirt. “We haven’t even been down there long and we’re already sweating buckets.”
“So?” Jamie questioned, “Obviously you’re still breathing so I don’t see what the problem is.”
Josh rolled his eyes, tossing the t-shirt on the deck. “Well I’m taking a break,” and with that he kicked off his shoes, peeled off his socks and then jumped into the pool.
Jamie made a face, using her arms to steer over to the side of the pool. “I’ll go call for take-out.” A beat passed as she wrapped a towel around her lower body, “and no I am not taking requests.”
While Jamie went back to her bedroom, Amy stayed in the pool, Josh hauling himself out and sitting on the deck. “You and J still own a bar, right?”
“Yes,” Amy replied, “obviously you were in the car earlier.”
“Well, I think you should take my iPod or Alex’s.”
“I’ll keep that in mind.”
“Keep what in mind?” Alex questioned, also wiping his brow with his t-shirt. “Maybe getting an air conditioner downstairs?”
“The iPod thing,” Amy said, not looking at either of the two. “For the bar tonight.”
Alex hooked his thumbs in the belt loops of his jeans, “you should totally go with mine. I have better taste in music.”
Josh rolled his eyes, shoving his friend into the pool.
