Mid-October

Despite the fact that the manor has not been at this capacity in quite some time, though not completely occupied, the morning after the masquerade ball is quiet. I hear the occasional opening and closing of doors, though all internally, and barely any movement is detected in the numerous hallways.

I personally won’t venture out of my chambers until the afternoon but that is more out of necessity than recreation.

When I do leave my chambers, I am not entirely surprised to find some signs of life within the manor, passing by Shawn in the main hallway as I make my way towards the expansive garage. Waiting in the garage, I see John arguing with one of the security guards, Punk stands not far off; an amused expression visible on his features.

I converse quickly with one of the other guards, soon learning that Punk and Cena wish to leave the premises for a while. But in order to do that, they need an escort otherwise they won’t be able to return.

I should intervene, I know, but I also have important business to attend to and cannot afford for any delays. The distant and distinct sound of high heels on marble floors indicates that one of my sisters is nearby and I wait before identifying Eve.

“Eve could accompany them,” I finally speak, the combined attention of the security guards, John and Punk turning towards me. “Wherever it is that they need to go, I’m sure she wouldn’t mind.”

My sister arches an eyebrow, “who am I being volunteered to babysit for?”

“I ain’t no baby,” John interrupts immediately. “And I don’t see why I can’t go by myself.”

“Because you are not officially recognized as a resident of the manor,” I flick a few strands of hair away from my face. “As such, though you can leave at will, you cannot return without an escort.”

“Which is what I was trying to tell him hours ago,” Punk explains to me. “But, obviously he wouldn’t listen.”

I smirk at him, “sounds just like someone else the first time they visited here.” And then I turn my attention to the key-rack while I speak to Cena, “you can even drive the Ferrari but you cannot leave without an escort.”

“Deal,” Eve replies with a grin, taking the keys from the rack, “let’s go.”

“But she just said I could drive,” Cena protests as he follows Eve through the garage.

I shake my head, reaching for my own keys on the rack.

“And where are you going?”

“I didn’t realize I needed to check in with anyone.”

Punk shrugs, jamming his hands into the pockets of his jeans. “Would you mind some company?”

I twirl the key-ring around my index finger, “would you listen if I told you no?”

“Nope,” he replies, following as I head towards my personal vehicle. “Besides, it gives me the chance to try and talk you into letting me drive.”

“Keep dreaming,” I reply as we reach my Maserati. “I won’t let anyone else drive my car.”

Punk rolls his eyes as he seats himself in the passenger’s seat. “So, where are we going?”

I wait until we’ve left the garage before I reply, settling on a radio station. “Silicon Valley, I need to check in with our CEOs and pick up some supplies.”

He turns up the radio, windows down, “how soon before the shit hits the fan?”

“Soon,” I say simply. “Perhaps another week or two at most before we’re called back to Budapest… it could even be sooner depending on the urgency and intensity of the battle.”

“You volunteering to go back first?”

“I wouldn’t think twice about it.”

Punk sets his jaw, “and you’d just leave everyone else behind without a second thought?”

I grip the steering wheel, “everyone else would arrive sooner or later. Or they could just volunteer to leave early.” I shrug, “what does it matter? We all know what we’re getting into.”

He reaches over, jerking the steering wheel and I’m beyond thankful that we’ve taken a back route and there’s no signs of any other traffic.

“What the hell is your problem?” I demand to know as I get out of the car. “There is nothing different about this situation than any other. I’ve been through wars and so have you.”

“We have unfinished business, Lita, that’s my problem.”

I refuse to meet his gaze, “and I already told you, it’s forbidden and punishable by death. My team needs me and your Pack needs you.”

He snorts, gripping my chin between his thumb and index finger. “For once, can’t you just separate yourself from that?”

“We almost got caught once, Phil…”

“Almost,” he replies, smirking at me. “But we didn’t.”

I can almost taste temptation, tantalizing and close. “There is far too much at risk,” I say finally. “And unless you feel like walking back, you’ll get back in the car and you won’t bring this up again.”

The remainder of our trip is in stony silence but I know that this conversation is far from over.
