Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Westchester County, New York

Amy knew she shouldn’t feel so angry at her grandmother’s funeral, but she couldn’t help it either. Underneath the overwhelming sadness was a layer of anger directed at two of her aunts, one uncle and five cousins. They’d hardly shed a tear when the illness was announced and hadn’t bothered to show up until the day before the wake. Their goodbyes were rushed and hurried and their tears were pretty fake as well.

The only part about them that was real was the greed at the anticipation of the reading of the will.

Everyone in the family was aware of the wealth that had been accumulated through careful financial investments and the family business, plus the properties in New York and Paris.

Amy, who had been raised by her grandmother and aunt after the untimely death of her parents, knew every detail of the will; a small bit of gratification at that knowledge. Her aunt would inherit the main property in Scarsdale, the loft in Paris and the vacation home in Monaco. Amy would inherit the mansion in Manhattan and the vast library of books. Antiques and artwork were to be divided between Amy and her aunt and her grandmother’s fortune was being divided amongst trust funds and endowments.

Everyone else in the immediate family should consider themselves lucky to have even inherited the $2,000 that had been left to each individual.

When the funeral was over, Amy went back to the manor in Scarsdale with her aunt, the two getting the house ready for the luncheon for the family.

Before her illness, Amy and her grandmother had spent a substantial amount of time, traveling and acquiring artifacts, antique toys and unique books; the two intending to convert part of the mansion in Manhattan into a bookstore and gift shop. Amy also wanting to add a café and art gallery, having gotten the approval from her grandmother to make the additions.

“She mentioned something about a family recipe box,” her aunt mentioned as they assisted the catering staff. “I’ll make sure you have that, and all of the books.”

“Thank you,” Amy replied, “and you’re sure that you don’t want me to stay for a couple of days?”

“I’ll manage just fine, don’t you worry about me.”

Amy hugged her, sharing a smile with her aunt before she exited the parlor. The rest of the family would be arriving at any minute. Even before her mother’s death, Amy had always shared a close bond with her aunt and grandmother. The rest of the family would only show up for important holidays and her grandmother’s birthday. As a result, Amy had never really considered herself close with the rest of her mother’s family and she didn’t know her father’s family very well, either.

And now, one of the few people that she had ever gotten close to in her life was gone, but somehow Amy knew that everything would be okay.
